Itinerary description

Azhdahak ( Աժդահակ ) is a volcanic mountain, the highest point of the Geghama range, and maybe ''the marvelous-EST'' mountain in Armenia.
The height of the mountain is 3597 m and it has stunning crater lake on the top.

Generally Azhdahak has 3 trails leading to the top:

1. From Sevaberd
2. From Geghard
3. From Tsaghkashen (hardly ever people climb Azhdahak from here)

The most common trail is Geghard trails (hiking part is the shortest), the most beautiful and classic one - from Akna lake.

Some information about the trail:

--- You start the hike from Sevaberd village ( Սևաբերդ գյուղ ) , here I uploaded the hiking trail to Sevaberd, but you can also get there by 4 x 4 vehicle.

--- After climbing Azhdahak you head to Nalsar campsite, if you want to continue to Geghard village (Nalsar - Vanki lake - Geghard ) or Badi lake (Azhdahak - Badi lake), look up those trails in my trail section.

~~~WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE GEGHAM MOUNTAINS ON THE WHOLE~~~
--- In the territory of the whole Geghama range ( Գեղամա լեռներ )there are a lot of tents of Yezidis (national minority in Armenia), which are shepherds' tents. You can contact them, if you need any help.
--- There are huge dogs of shepherds spread in this area (Alabay, Armenian Gampr or Caucasian shepherd), they can attack even if you are not so close to their territory or near tents. Usually they bark but don't bite, but you should be aware, pass that part quickly and have some food to throw them in case if they come very close to you (it can be also a slice of bread)
--- The weather in the Gegham mountains is awfully unsustainable, it can be sunny, rainy and stormy simultaneously during 2 hours so be ready for the weather changes and don't trust so much weather forecasts in this area.
--- The perfect season for the Geghama range is from early June till the beginning of August, the best season is July (June is still snowy, the vegetation gets dried in August).
--- There is not any mobile service that works in the Gegham mountains, they work only when you are close to its villages, also you can have service in the locations below :
-- Close to Lake Akna, on the summit of mountain Shamprasar, Shushan and Aknasar .
--- On Azhdahak summit (near the triangle)
--- Near Nalsar mountain (Not always)
--- Near Vishapalich lake's dragonstones (Vishapner) (Not always)
    This trek is doable t
    at least in 2 or way better in 3 days.
    Day 1: Sevaberd - Akna lake
    Day 2: Akna lake - Azhdahak - Akna lake
    Day 3: Akna lake - Sevaberd
    Or another option:
    Day 1: Sevaberd - Akna lake
    Day 2: Akna lake - Azhdahak - Vanki lake
    Day 3: Vanki lake - Geghard
    All the areas near the lakes are great for camping.
    Thanks! 🙏 Would you recommend starting from Sevaberd or Geghard? Which is usually easier to get to Yerevan then?
    Hi Shushan, I will make a solo trekking in July with my tent. Is there water for drink in this road?
    Thank's a lot. Andrea.
    Hello, you can take water from Akna lake, in July you may see other small lakes on the way to the summit, don't forget to take water filter with you to be on the safe side.
    Ok, thank you.
    you seem like an expert of this places....I want to walk a ring from Sevaberd to Gheghard through Akna lake (I think to camp here) and Ajdahac top. Is a marked mountain path or is easy lost? I don't use GPS, I like walk only with paper maps and compass....
    It's fully wild area without any blazed signs.
    So I'll recommend to have GPS with you as the area is really huge and here you are out of service all the time.
