Itinerary description
Auburn State Recreation Area (http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=502) Robie Point area. This second part of the Mountain Quarry Railroad bed is unmaintained. The passage in and out of valleys where the trestles used to be is nothing more than deer trails. These "deer trails" often have a lot of exposure. Therefore, I am not recommending this trail in its current condition. (I am not resposible for you safety.) However, I can see lots of potential. In Nevada county we have the wheelchair-accessible Independence trail. If the trestles were replaced on this trail, the same could be done here. The railbed itself is in good shape.
To view this section of RR bed, start near the 2.5 mile mark on Western States trail near the end of Mountain Quarry Railroad part 1. I stopped where there was a very deep canyon with little evidence of more "deer trails". On the return, I have marked a short side trail that will get you back to WST instead of returning the same way.
There is also a turn on the Pardner's trail that use to connect to the Rock trail on the Cool side of the river with a ford across the river. This is mostly historical, but the remains of the trail are there.
This "trail" is not a stand alone trail. For trailhead information see
