Itinerary description

In Pointed Rocks ranch (also called Knickerbocker Ranch or Olmstead trail area.) This is a historic trail -- one of the original Auburn/cool trails possibly from the gold mining era. It goes from Cool to a place on the river where there used to be a ford. The trail is difficult to find today even though it is on the USGS topo maps. It can also be seen on the PARC map: http://www.parc-auburn.org/parc_map.htm

I have included the trail from the trailhead. The first mile is easy since it is mostly an old dirt road that is part of the Olmstead loop and trail system. At the include waypoint, the trail leaves the Olmstead system. It crosses a grassy field. On this next half mile, there is little or no trace of the original trail. After that half mile, there is a faint trail occasionally disappearing. Closer to the bottom, you will find old rock walls that were built up to create a stable trail bed. Watch for poison oak, mountain lions, sharp drop offs and eroded trailbeds. Hiking poles might make this steep hike a little more pleasant. I am not necessarily recommending this trail, except for people who may be interested in it for its historic roots.
