Itinerary description

In Pointed Rocks ranch (also called Knickerbocker Ranch or Olmstead trail area.) This trail was obviously a wide bulldozed dirt road many decades ago. Now there is only a whisper of a trail with the forest and the brush trying to reclaim the land. There is not a lot of reason to follow this trail unless you are geocaching or if you just want to get off the main trails and have a private experience of the forest. Oak, ponderosa and tree-sized manzanita line this trail. The trail ends in a clearing or what used to be a clearing. Now there are a few young manzanita about 5 feet tall. Between the trees and brush there is a hint of a great view of the canyon, but those trees make it hard to really get a view .

I call this mystery clearing because I have not figured out its purpose. There are no old foundations or feral vinca that would be an indication of an old homestead. There are no old fence lines or steal cables that you often find in the canyon. Was it a firebreak or something to do with the dam investigation? Who knows?

This is not a stand alone trail. Park behind the cool fire station. To get to the trailhead, take the olmstead loop in the counterclockwise direction for 2.6 miles:

or the salt creek pond loop for 1.3 miles and then a .4 mile section of olmstead loop:
