Itinerary description
In Pointed Rocks ranch (also called Knickerbocker Ranch or Olmstead trail area.) The trail junction on the olmstead loop says that this trail goes to Auburn via the coffer dam. Unfortunately it does not go there. Gate 161 is locked and it says that the dam construction area is closed to everyone. I am hoping that will change soon, since the dam construction area is now open from all sides except this one. On the Auburn side there are now public roads down to the dam construction site. Even if the state opens this gate, there is no crossing on the river. The diversion tunnel has now been closed, so there are no more trails across the river bed.
However, this loop is a nice shady walk. Since both side of it are in steep valleys, most of this area is in dense, cool, shady forest and thus provides different scenary than the rolling grasslands of the olmstead loop.
This is not a stand alone trail. Park behind the Cool fire station. Walk one mile on the dam construction road :

Alternate ways to get out to the start of this trail the salt creek pond loop or the olmstead loop
