Itinerary description
A hike around the old and new quarries in a loop without much backtracking. You can start at PG&E trail if you win the very limited parking lottery, Quarry Road parking area or the operational quarry. The Quarry Road trail head parking is $10 in the lot, or free along 49 and the PG&E trail head. Bathrooms at the Quarry Road parking and the picnic area near PG&E trail & Quarry Road. I don't know of a way between the PG&E trail and the operational quarry entrance other than walking along 49. There is a path beside the road part of the way, but watch for down barbwire on the path, and on the rest of that section watch out for cars before proceeding through some of the narrow shoulder sections. The best views of the active quarry I found were from 49. The active quarry is fenced off with a passage way for where the trail entrance cuts through. I didn't find any decent views of the active quarry on the trail past its East side. There is no public access to Jeep Trail road. Following GPS tracks was very helpful in finding some of the turnoffs to the less used trails but we still got it a bit wrong where PG&E trail diverges from the road to the PG&E gate. Several of the trails in this loop are narrow and occasionally steep, unlike Quarry Road "Trail". Well worth the taking the side branches for spectacular views of the old quarry from above. Look to your left as you leave the floor of the old quarry and start up the PG&E trial for a nice view. This track include the gated off entrance to the Mountain Quarries Mine/cave and the nearby ruins.
