Itinerary description
NOTE: A recording glitch occurred when Wikiloc lost satellite connection while I was inside the culvert. In reality, I walked straight thru the culvert but Wikiloc added a non-existent detour at mile 2.8 - 3.0. Subtract .2 miles from this recording due to satellite interference error.
This hike offers gorgeous views of both the Middle and North Forks of the American River. As you climb the Middle Fork side of the ridge, you’ll have a bird’s-eye view of the Quarry Trail and the Cave Valley rock climbing area on the other side of the river. After you’ve crested the ridge on the Fuel Break Trail and are descending on the North Fork side of the ridge, you’ll have a great view of Lake Clementine and the backside of the dam.
There are vault or porta toilets at the Confluence trailhead, the Mammoth Bar Rd trailhead, and at the Lower Lake Clementine Rd trailhead. If you choose to walk down to the dam at mi 5.7, there is a toilet at the boat ramp.
If you have more climbing left in your legs, taking the side road down to the dam at mi 5.7 is well worth the trip. There are benches to sit on and the spray from the waterfall creates glorious rainbows.
