Itinerary description

The hike starts with a steep descent to the Western states Trail along the American River. This part of the trail takes you past the new wooden bridge built at the Black Hole of Calcutta waterfall. We will be walking past many historic ruins of the old Quarry railroad bridges. At the long-standing Mountain Quarries Bridge spanning the American River (locally known as No Hands Bridge) you head left and upward to hike the frontage trail along Old Foresthill Rd. until you reach the ranger kiosk (and bathrooms) at gate 137. From there, head uphill on Stagecoach Trail as you quickly gain elevation to overlook the river below. At about the 3.25 mile mark turn left and downhill on the Manzanita Trail which will take you back to the starting point.
