Itinerary description

This walk follows an old pack horse route from Askrigg to Castle Bolton, high on the north side of the valley of Wensleydale.
We parked in the village car park at Askrigg, on the road leading out of the village towards Leyburn.
To start the walk pass between houses next to the car park, over two small paddocks, behind a bungalow and follow the footpath to Newbiggin.
From Newbiggin take a footpath in a north easterly direction across fields to Heugh where you pick up the old pack horse route.
It is then a fairly level walk passing old quarrys and lead mines. The road sometimes peters out to just a path, but it is signposted from time to time, so is easy to follow.
Near the end you cross a footbridge over a stream then follow the track into Castle Bolton.
There are refreshments both at Askrigg, Humble Pie is very good, and in the castle at Castle Bolton.
To get back to Askrigg you have two alternatives. We left a car at each end which was easy for us as we were in a group.
Alternatively, get the timetable for the Little White Bus and plan your walk to meet the bus at the end of the road leading down from Castle Bolton, and ride back to Askrigg.
