Itinerary description
At the Col de Ceyssat is a parking and two restaurants. From here you can walk the Sentier des Muletiers up the Puy de Dôme. At the moment (2011), it is the only way to get to the top of the extinct volcano. A railway is being built and ready by the end of 2011 after which you can also ascent by train or bike. The track is broad and smooth, although steep in places. On the day I walked up, the top was initially shrouded in clouds, but at the top the clouds lifted and I had some magnificent views of the Auvergne countryside, the chain of volcanoes (Chaîne des Puys), Clermont-Ferrand, the large telecom antenna at the top, and the Mercury temple. At the top, a large section was inaccessible due to the work on the railway, and you are diverted via paved walkways to the various sights. Other tracks to and from the summit were closed, and will remain closed to the end of 2011.
