Itinerary description

Mount Dinara is included within the karst complex of the Alpes Dinaricos or Dinarides mountain range.
The Dinara massif reaches a dozen kilometers wide, with its highest points being the Troglav "Three Heads" peak, 1,913m and Sinjal_Dinara vrh, 1,831m , the latter being the highest point in Croatia.

Despite being close to the Dalmatian coast and the Adriatic Sea, the mountainous strip of Mount Dinara assumes a mountain climate, with winters much colder than on the coast. As we will be able to verify, the human presence is scarce, found in the valleys of the surrounding small villages and cabins.

During the ascent we will walk along the Osljak pit edge, 1,706m , this magnificent southwest slope being an attraction for climbers, there is a fully equipped refuge next to its level.

After the end of the journey, we will approach the nearby Izvor Cetina, the impressive source of the Cetina River, which will give us the last views of the day before returning to our base camp in the coastal city of Zadar.

We decided to climb Mount Dinara from the south, we will have as a starting point a small car park in the upper area of the village of Glavas. Here we will have arrived by road from the city of Knin, the last section being a narrow road in perfect condition. In the same way we will approach the close to Izvor Cetina.
We begin the comfortable ascent towards the summit, today we will always walk along well defined and marked trails at the crossroads that come out.
This first part is quite comfortable, gaining ground with a gentle slope, before entering fully into the mountains we come across the ruins of Glavas Castle dominating the valley.

We resume the ascent, now going to walk through a grove in the middle of the slope, little by little we gain ground at the head of the valley. Before we have left the entrance to a small cave that we will leave for the return, since we will share this path at the end.
We reach the head of the valley, pass next to a spring and arrive at a crossroads, from here we will make a circular journey to the vertex of Dinara vrh.
For the ascent we are left with the variant on our left, ascent to Dinara through Osljak and the Drago Grubag Refuge.

We are now heading towards the southwest flank of the mountains, first a steeper ascent will bring us closer to the line of pits that run the entire length of the west strip.
We completed this stage of the ascent with the imposing pits to our left, it didn't take us long to gain height and crown the milestone that marks the summit of Osljak.
Below us we can discover escape routes from the climbing routes that break into Osljak from the western walls of Mount Dinara.
A few meters away, the fully equipped Drago Grubag Refuge offers us shelter at any time of the year, finding its facilities in perfect condition.

We continue the march on the western rope, sometimes walking in the middle of the hillside and others on the smooth hill that lines the final part of the ascent to Dinara.
After a change in grade we will already point to the front on the hill that contains the geodesic vertex and the house that marks its summit.
Smooth and comfortable advance the one that awaits us in the high part of the mountain range.

A short and final effort leaves us at the top, we finally win the wide panoramic views. To the south the wide valley of the Cetina river and to the north the lonely mountains of Dinara.

We begin the descent, this time along the path that leads us to the plateau of Mount Dinara.
We roll again along a defined path, over the central hills of the massif and parallel to our ascent route to the east. When the time comes to lose height at a faster pace, we will do it immersed in the autumn stamp of a grove that lasts at this point in the mountains.
A few tens of meters more entertaining, with the path less clear but with a perfectly defined course, the wide plain that extends to the front.

After this short karst episode, we soon made landfall on the sunny side of the Dinara plateau. A sharp path leads us to abandon the mountain range, leaving on our left the path that turns towards the nearby Refuge Martinova Kosara.
Not many steps separate us to return to the crossroads from which we began the circular journey in the morning.
After the crossing we resume our first steps of ascent.

During the descent, this time yes, we will move a few meters towards the ridge to discover the small cave that this morning we left without visiting.

We close the route with the Glavas Castle tower rising above the valley, a sign of the proximity of our starting point in the village of Glavas.

We are going to the mountains.
