Mount Mtelo, at 3336m, is the fifth highest peak in Kenya.

The difficulty of the ascent is slight, although the terrain is steep and climbs almost straight. Stopping from time to time to catch air, presents no moment of technical difficulty. What can happen is to lose a little route to the highest area. The bushes are constantly covering the road and the help of a guide is needed to keep track of the account (I had the eldest son of John Yoposiwa, the owner of the only accommodation available in Mungat, Mount Holiday cottages near Mtelo (Municipality Eco Lodge).

During the ascent you cross a small stream that can provide fresh water. The rest of the route is dry.

As for the views, it’s surprising that the summit has less visibility than many moments of the climb. But what you do see once up is the north face where you can see the Turkwel Dam (Turkwel Dam or Turkwel Gorge). To the west you can see the colossal Mount Elgon and to the east the Cherangany Mountains with the characteristic Mount Koh in the foreground.

To get to the starting point (the village of Mungat), you need a 4x4 vehicle with a lot of low altitude. The road from Marich Pass is a steep climb that features cement “ruts” to improve traction. But it often exceeds 25% of the ascending slope. They are about 18kms (not all uphill) that require more than an hour of driving.

However, it is a recommended adventure for both the beauty and the simplicity it presents. And, surprising as it may seem, you will find families living up to over 2500m.
