Itinerary description
A spectacular rocky slot canyon.
Also called Sara's crack or crack in the mountain.
Drive HWY 95 south, at MP 177 turn right into Sara park.
After about 0.7 mile there is a parking on the right. There is another parking 200 yards further.
Follow the wash south/west. The yellow trail goes into the slot, the blue is the return route above the canyon.
Once in the canyon you encounter a nice drop (photo). You can slide it down, be careful not to pick up too much speed. Try to break your speed as much as possible.
And when unlucky the passage is blocked by water. More than knee keep in January 2011. Only a few feet, but impassible.
Going back is more difficult, the rock on the left of the slide is the best spot.
One of us climbed up and the other(s) can be pulled up the slide using (hiking) sticks.
If you can't make it take the blue route, or take the slightly more difficult route left up the mountain (south). A bit slippery, but on top there are burro trails easy to follow in the direction of the lake.
Keep on the right of the growth/march and follow the trail towards the lake (Balance Rock Cove).
At the lake, take the blue trail back.
When you haven't seen the other side of the slot, you can descend the canyon.
The GPS route is relatively easy going downhill.
Hiking time: 3 Hour 10 minutes.
