Itinerary description
A scenic hike to Lizard tail cove.
Park at SARA Park, take the second parking on the right opposite the Hawks entrance.
Hike into the small canyon downhill.
When you come into the wider crack wash, turn left, into a passage between hills. You have to pass a low steel cable fence.
The obvious trail goes a bit uphill and descends on the other side.
Follow the trail along a fence, along and sometimes in a small wash.
At point "Wash 1" cross a larger sandy wash and hike uphill on a trail on the other side.
you meet an old Jeep trail, turn left on the jeep trail. After about 100 Yards a trail leaves the jeep trail to the right, take it.
At the next crossing "Xing 1" turn right and head for Shiprock. This is a pointy rock, see "photo 1".
Keep going towards the Shiprock, until close before Shiprock, the trail crosses a wash.
Follow the wash to the right, downhill.
This wash will end in the black canyon.
At this point "Drop 1" a series of dry falls, that can be bypassed by going back (left) along the other (black) canyon.
Find the trail leading into the black canyon.
Follow the black canyon towards the lake.
As you can't go further because of the dense scrubs, keep low on the left bank.
Follow it to Lizard cove and take a look at the Lizard.
Hike the same way back.
Alternatively you can make a loop following the red canyon back.
This is a small stretch cross country, but very easy to do.
