Itinerary description

The hikes starting at the Höfener Mühle are rightly known for the access to the Daffodil fields - when in season. But the area is beautiful during all times of the year. In this case, we even found Apple and Plum trees along the trails.

This trail explores some of lesser known paths in the area. Particularly noteworthy is the portion from the 'Holländerhäuschen' (the house of the Dutch guy, way point 3) to the 'Lange Schneise' (long glade, way point 5), and the trail back from way point 15 to the house of the Dutchman. The latter path has been classified on some maps as a mountain-trail, and signposts have recently been removed - owing to the state of the footpath, which due to some erosion along the Fuhrtsbach stream has one or two tricky bits.

Overall, there is a good mix of narrow footpaths and forest roads.

Note that trails on the Belgian side of the border may be closed, when military exercises are taking place in the nearby Elsenborn Camp, though on weekends the area is mostly open. Observe the signposts.

We included an extra loop at the end of the hike. We had planned, at waypoint 16, to cross the street, follow some stairs down and some footpath (signposted with the #71) back to the parking lot. Because there were logging activities going on, this short piece of the trail was closed and we followed the road back to the parking.
