Itinerary description
Day 6/7 of slackpacking Georgia on the AT. Trip organized by Above the Clouds Hostel in Suches (highly recommended).
Got dropped off at Unicoi Gap and picked up at Dicks Creek Gap.
This section is pretty long, as well as fairly strenuous. Steep climb to start, steep descent to finish and nothing but going up and down in between. The trail is reasonably even - some rocks, but not too many roots. Well maintained and marked with white blazes.
The views from Rocky Mountain are better than the view from Tray Mountain. Most of the time you're going through the trees, but there's some variety - changing leaves in the fall, rhododendron groves and a laurel forest in the last few miles.
I saw a black bear at the very beginning. He ran off as soon as he spotted me, not a problem.
