Itinerary description
Day 2/7 of slackpacking Georgia on the AT. Trip organized by Above the Clouds Hostel in Suches (highly recommended).
Got dropped off at the Springer Mt parking lot and picked up at Coopers Gap.
Includes two optional but short detours to Long Creek Falls and Hickory Flats Cemetery. Would recommend.
This section starts with a long, but not too steep descent alongside Stover Creek down to Three Forks. The trail passes through a rhododendron forest. After crossing Chester Creek there is a steady climb of around 5 km, followed by a few kms of descent and a final climb up and down Sassafras Mountain.
The trail is rocky in places and covered in roots in other, but well maintained overall. It's marked by the white AT blazes.
There is somewhat of a view halfway up Sassafras, otherwise the tree canopy is too dense.
The rhododendrons would probably be beautiful in bloom in springtime, but the changing colors in October were pretty as well.
