Trail is well marked (white blaze) and pretty hard to miss. The trail is sometimes re-routed to allow for re-growth/rejuvenation so GPS data from a few years ago may not match hiking reality. I recently hiked the first 350 miles and did not use GPS or feel the need to do so.
The physical side of the hike is demanding especially if you are doing good mileage on a daily basis. But I was really surprised by the 'logistics' difficulties (water re-supply, food re-supply, campsite selection (arrive late and risk not getting a spot, or end up with the badly sloped or muddy site). In-hike planning was necessary on a daily basis with frequent revisions... a 3 mile section may be accomplished in less than an hour or take longer than 3 hours which impacts your food and water needs as well as where you spend the night (shelters are nice in thunderstorms).
Previous conditioning (with elevation changes) a light pack (frequent re-supply) and a guide book (AWOL) with planning skills will increase your chance of success/enjoyment of this classic trail.
