Spectacular trekking in the heart of the Himalayas to the Annapurna base camp.
The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek or trekking to the Annapurna Base Camp is a good alternative to the famous Annapurna Circuit, which is longer and requires more days on the route. This, on the other hand, goes directly to the heart of the Himalayas and reaches the base camp of Annapurna I, above 4,100 m.
In my case, I started the route in Phedi to get to the base camp and then go down towards Ghorepani and Poon Hill. From there, one more day on the way to Nayapul where you can take a bus back to Pokhara.
The route is technically simple, which does not mean easy. In the initial part of the route there are a variety of paths that take you to the small villages on the slopes of the mountains and once we reach Chhomrong, only one path will continue up, crossing the impressive valley of Modi Khola.
During the first km of the route we will walk along paths and we will go up and down thousands of stairs. Once we enter the Modi Khola valley, the stairs will disappear and we will continue climbing the path surrounded by magnificent and impressive peaks above 7,000 meters until we reach the ABC (Annapurna Base Camp), where we can enjoy the IMPRESSIVE south face of Annapurna I. (8,091m).
Although the route is not difficult, it is tiring and the slope is considerable. Every few km we will find small towns where we can rest, eat, shop or sleep.
The route can be done with or without guides, even with porters who carry your weight, although I recommend doing it on your own. In my case, I bought a map in a bazaar in Kathmandu and did the route alone.
A unique and highly recommended experience.
