Itinerary description
Stretching on a surface of about 10 square kilometers, the Monsanto Forest Park (Parque Florestal de Monsanto) is the largest green space in Lisbon, such that it can be easily deemed the green lung of the city and of the adjoining localities.
We start out in Benfica where we are required to take the pedestrian crossover to access the park. We then make a left to start our loop on the yellow path. On the trail we can find fountains as well as sports equipment such as a climbing wall and a basketball court.
We keep walking on the gravel road with the forest on our right side and spectacular views of Lisbon on our left side to then get to the Aqueduto das Águas Livres, "Aqueduct of the Free Waters, a historic acqueduct in the city covering 18 km.
We then make our way deeper into the park surrounded by trees such as the eucalyptus. Then, we finally get to the end of the loop having walked for approximately 10km.
Overall, a rather peaceful and easy hike. It is definitely a nice way to spend half a day in nature without travelling far from the city.
EQUIPMENT:
• Hiking boots.
• Water (2 litres).
• Rain jacket.
• Sunscreen.
• First-aid Kit.
• Biodegradable Plastic Bag.
• Visor hat.
• Sunglasses.
