La rocca d'Aries, nei pressi di Montone, ha origini molto antiche, fu eretta dalla famiglia Fortebracci sui resti di un antico fortilizio a difesa della primitiva popolazione. La rocca ha subito nel tempo le vicende storiche di Montone, assumendo nei secoli una funzione difensiva e residenziale, ma dal Cinquecento si è resa indipendente dalla cittadina umbra. A pianta rettangolare, con torre circolare su un lato, ha subito diversi interventi per essere adattata a scopi abitativi, nonostante mantenga ancora intatta la massiccia struttura fortificata. Già dall'anno mille se ne hanno notizie, ma è dal 1376 che la rocca comincia ad intrecciare la sua storia con la famiglia Fortebracci. In quell'anno Oddo III, padre del famoso Braccio, la conquistò, riportandola sotto l'egemonia della vicina Città di Castello. Dopo pochi anni i magistrati perugini, ripresane la proprietà, decisero di far diventare rocca d'Aries molto più massiccia per renderla inespugnabile, affidando la direzione dei lavori, viste le sue grandi capacità, a Oddo III Fortebracci. Nel 1380 la struttura era terminata, e negli anni successivi fu sempre contesa tra Perugia e Città di Castello, perché considerata difficilmente attaccabile. Nel XV secolo diventò possedimento di Braccio Fortebracci, che nel frattempo divenne signore assoluto di gran parte dell'Umbria. Vi soggiornava spesso la sua famiglia, in particolare la moglie Nicola Varano. Nel Cinquecento la proprietà della rocca passò alla famiglia Bentivoglio, e le notizie successive sono del 1596, anno in cui la fortezza fu attaccata da seicento banditi che, in quel periodo, scorrazzavano per tutto il territorio eugubino, creando una serie infinita di danni. Intanto cambiarono anche i proprietari della rocca, dai Bentivoglio era stata venduta per 15.000 scudi romani al conte Giambattista Cantalmaggi e da questo, per diritti ereditari, passò alla famiglia Della Porta. Negli anni ottanta del Novecento apparteneva ancora a questa famiglia quando fu comprata dalla Regione Umbria.

The fortress of Aries, near Montone, has very ancient origins, it was built by the Fortebracci family on the remains of an ancient fortress to defend the primitive population. The fortress has undergone the historical events of Montone over the centuries, assuming a defensive and residential function over the centuries, but from the sixteenth century it became independent from the Umbrian town. With a rectangular plan, with a circular tower on one side, it has undergone several interventions to be adapted for residential purposes, although it still maintains the massive fortified structure intact. We have news of it since the year one thousand, but it is from 1376 that the fortress begins to intertwine its history with the Fortebracci family. In that year Oddo III, father of the famous Braccio, conquered it, bringing it back under the hegemony of the nearby Città di Castello. After a few years the Perugian magistrates, taking back the property, decided to make the Rocca d'Aries much more massive to make it impregnable, entrusting the direction of the works, given his great skills, to Oddo III Fortebracci. In 1380 the structure was finished, and in the following years it was always disputed between Perugia and Città di Castello, because it was considered difficult to attack. In the 15th century it became a possession of Braccio Fortebracci, who in the meantime became absolute lord of most of Umbria. His family often stayed there, especially his wife Nicola Varano. In the sixteenth century the ownership of the fortress passed to the Bentivoglio family, and the following news is from 1596, the year in which the fortress was attacked by six hundred bandits who, at that time, roamed throughout the Gubbio area, creating an infinite series of damages. Meanwhile, the owners of the fortress also changed, from the Bentivoglio family it had been sold for 15,000 Roman scudi to Count Giambattista Cantalmaggi and from this, by inheritance rights, it passed to the Della Porta family. In the 1980s it still belonged to this family when it was bought by the Umbria Region.
