Monte Forno or Dreiländerecke is a classic and very popular destination in the Julian Alps, just think that there is the possibility to get almost to the top by car and from the Austrian side with a chairlift. It remains a place of spectacular sight and a profound meaning of meeting three very different cultures, Italian, Austrian and Slovenian. We decide to walk up from Rateče in Slovenia. The path starts from the last houses of the village, it is perfectly indicated and marked by frequent yellow arrows with the words “Tromeja” 18 (means three borders). You immediately go up a beautiful path in the woods then the slope is reduced, the path becomes relaxing until you skirt a stream. After about half an hour you have to turn left and climb into the woods (we went straight on until we realized the mistake (the arrow was not positioned clearly). After about an hour from the start we arrive at the Tromeja refuge, unfortunately closed. From here our route is a steep climb in tight curves with 31 hairpin bends (all numbered) that takes us to the top in three quarters of an hour. Apart from the antenna (really annoying), the summit is very beautiful and deserves to be discovered: a monument in three languages that celebrates peace as the glue of the peoples, a summit cross that recalls the meeting of three languages and an immense plateau of meadow in the presence of an infinite chain of mountains whose nationality has lost its meaning, the grandeur and continuity of one in the other remain. We choose to return by tracing a ring. We take the 603 and then the 522 from the Italian side . The descent is easy, always in the woods. A few crashes do not create problems, it is well overcome. However, the signs create some problems, especially when you are on 522. The signs are not always there, they do not show the n of the path and we often found ourselves in uncertainty. Even now in Slovenian territory the problem has remained. The orientation but above all the technological aids we have today have helped us.
