Itinerary description
We start in Amiais de Baixo, close to Pastelaria Amiense where we can find parking place.
From Amiais to Monsanto we follow the track to Fatima. In this part we walk through a forest where we can see different species of orchids in this time of the year (May 1st). We walk over dirt roads that are in a good shape.
Just before Monsanto we abandon the track to Fatima and go the little town of Monsanto instead. In the center we can find a couple of bars, a restaurant and some murales. There is also a public toilet.
Once we have passed Monsanto the track at times is just a narrow trail in the forest. We have some pretty views on a rock formation and at a certain point the going gets a bit more difficult because we have to pass a rather steep descent (6km from the start - counter clock wise). The vegetation is very nice in this area, occasional eucalyptus trees and many wild flowers.
Once we have crossed the road from Amiais de Cima to Monsanto we enter in a eucalyptus forest. Every now and then we have nice views.
Just before returning to Amiais de Baixo we pass a picnic place where we can find drinking water and shade.
We walk back through the old center to the place of departure. The church is worth a small detour from the main road.
The only asphalt is in the two towns (Amiais and Monsanto) the rest of the track is on dirt roads.
Trekking shoes are preferred.
