Itinerary description

Hike notes - 9th October 2020

3 day Alpine Hike - 96km
Parts of the Australian alpine walking track (AAWT).

Experienced some pretty treacherous, adverse and wild winter weather. Rained, hailed and slightly sleeted the entire time with foggy white outs and wind gusts up to 100km/hr.

Steep going up to Cleve Cole Hut on day 1. Steep coming down Quartz Ridge in the whiteout cloud and rain on day 2 followed by a chilly thigh deep Big River crossing following the recent snow and endless rain.

Experienced gusting winds across the Bogong High Plains with hail coming in sideways due to very strong winds that were difficult to battle.

Changed our plans to hike back to Hotham due to the adverse weather and some obstacles in our path including a flooded causeway over the road between Pretty Valley Hut and Tawonga Huts which meant we needed to take a large detour including some backtracking. It was also late evening and poor conditions meant our packs and clothes were soaked in water in the freezing conditions.

We made our way around to the SEC Cope Saddle refuge hut near Mount Cope and made new plans to instead hike out to Trapyard Gap after dark - ending a gruelling 45km day of hiking in harsh conditions.

While we didn’t experience any of the glorious views the Mt Bogong and Bogong high plains offer due to endless cloud and storms, we kept in good spirits and had a great hike visiting a number of our iconic Australian huts.

Would love to come back and do the trek again in summer on clear days and take in the endless views the area is known for.
