Itinerary description
Alcedo Atthis is the Kingfisher (German: Eisvogel). This trail follows some streams in the Hellenthal-Hollerath area, where - with luck - the Kingfisher may be seen. Alas, it might have been too early in the season, we didn't see any.
This is a long winter-trail: more than 20 kilometers, with ca 400 meters elevation gain and loss, mainly on forest and farm trails - most of it also suitable for bikes. Owing to some outdated maps, there have been two modest difficulties that should not be any deterrent: One farm trail endet at a barbed wire fence; the other is an abandoned and overgrown trail crossing the border from Germany to Belgium.
The route passes some hamlet whose names you will bot remember (unless you are from the area). Note that the restaurant at the Oberprether Mühle is now (early 2019) closed.
