Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es El Serón, de 1112 metros

Descripción del monte (extraído de www.mendikat.net):

Modestísima cumbre de la vertiente norte de la sierra de Toloño. Es una loma despejada de vegetación y más o menos plana, que domina los prados de Riparasa, al Oeste, y los de Ortada, al Sur. Un collado (1066 m), la une al macizo principal de Toloño (1271 m). Por la vertiente Norte este monte presenta mayor desnivel pero su poco relieve en la zona Sur hace de su ascensión una curiosidad

Mi ascensión

Breve y sencilla ruta que sube a la cima de El Serón (1112 m). La salida se realiza después de haber dejado el coche en un aparcamiento que hay a la izquierda de la carretera A-3202, inmediatamente después de haber pasado la divisoria con La Rioja, según se viene de Peñacerrada. Gran parte de la ruta es a través de bosque y no tiene complicaciones de terreno, pendiente o de orientación

Tras unos primeros metros caminando por la carretera, abandonamos ésta por la izquierda, entrando en pista forestal de tierra que se adentra en un bosque de hayas y pinos. La ruta sale desde una altitud de 950 metros con lo que no se esperan grandes desniveles. Hasta llegar al desvío hacia la cima, la pista va a ser siempre ancha, muy clara y sin mucha pendiente. Caminamos por el bosque con mucha tranquilidad. En la zona del bosque donde predominan las hayas el camino está más cubierto mientras que donde hay más pinos, el espacio es más expuesto al sol

La subida más sencilla a El Serón es por su parte Sur y por eso estamos rodeando el monte por el Norte. Seguimos por la pista principal de tierra hasta abandonarla (ver WPT) y meternos por una zona despejada y herbosa que se acerca a la cima por el Sur. No hay un punto marcado para desviarse finalmente hacia la cima. Cualquier punto sirve para atacar la pendiente herbosa y con algún árbol diseminado que lleva a la cumbre. Aquí tenemos el tramo con más pendiente de toda la ruta (28%), si bien es muy corto

La cima está marcada con un hito de piedras y es una loma despejada. No tiene gran valor, sinceramente. Lo que sí es bonita es la vista hacia el Sur, hacia el farallón que constituye la cumbre del Toloño (1277 m)





Tras alcanzar la cima, descendemos por la campa para encontrar un pequeño collado en donde hay que localizar una senda de tierra que nos lleva de vuelta. Esta senda está marcada con pintura blanca y amarilla. Es un tramo boscoso muy verde y encantador; tiene alguna zona con pendiente fuerte de bajada (-35%)



Tras retomar la pista principal, el descenso es sencillo; se puede recortar un poco por un atajo (ver WPT) que nos lleva a la puerta metálica que cruzamos al inicio. Un último punto antes de llegar al parking es la Peña Mirandona. Es una loma sin interés

Nota: esta ruta, o parte de ella, es de ida y vuelta. Las indicaciones de los desvíos que se facilitan en el itinerario corresponden a la subida. Es decir, si el WPT marca “Izquierda”, es un desvío a la izquierda al subir, pero a la derecha al bajar

Modest summit of the northern slope of the Toloño mountain range. It is a hill clear of vegetation and more or less flat, overlooking the meadows of Riparasa, to the west, and those of Ortada, to the south. A pass (1066 m) joins it to the main massif of Toloño (1271 m). On the northern slope, this mountain has a greater slope, but its low relief in the south makes its ascent a curiosity

My ascent

Short and simple route that climbs to the top of El Serón (1112 m). The start is made after leaving the car in a parking lot on the left side of the A-3202 road, immediately after passing the border with La Rioja, as you come from Peñacerrada. Much of the route is through forest and has no complications of terrain, slope or orientation

After a few meters walking along the road, we leave it to the left, entering a dirt forest track that goes into a forest of beech and pine trees. The route starts at an altitude of 950 meters, so we do not expect big slopes. Until you reach the turnoff to the summit, the track will always be wide, very well marked and not very steep. We walk through the forest with a lot of tranquility. In the area of the forest where beech trees predominate, the trail is more covered, while where there are more pines, the space is more exposed to the sun

The easiest ascent to El Serón is on the south side and that is why we are going around the mountain to the north. We follow the main dirt track until we leave it (see WPT) and enter a clear and grassy area that approaches the summit from the south. There is no marked point to finally turn off towards the summit. Any point can be used to attack the grassy slope with some scattered trees that leads to the summit. Here we have the steepest section of the entire route (28%), although it is very short

The summit is marked with a stone landmark and is a clear hill. It has no great value, honestly. What is nice is the view to the south, towards the cliff that is the summit of Toloño (1277 m).





After reaching the summit, we descend through the field to find a small col where we must locate a dirt path that takes us back. This path is marked with white and yellow paint. It is a very green and charming wooded section; it has some areas with a steep downhill slope (-35%)



After rejoining the main track, the descent is easy; it can be shortened a bit by a shortcut (see WPT) that takes us to the metal gate that we crossed at the start. A last point before reaching the parking is the Peña Mirandona. It is an uninteresting hill

Note: this route, or part of it, is a round trip. The indications of the detours provided in the itinerary correspond to the ascent. That is to say, if the WPT marks "Left", it is a detour to the left on the way up, but to the right on the way down
