Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Santa Elena, de 1111 metros

Cumbre de los Montes de Iturrieta situada en su zona norte, que domina la Llanada Alavesa (Arabako Lautada). Al sur queda el impresionante cañón que forma el río Musitu, conocido con el nombre de Barranco de Igoroin. Este bonito desfiladero se puede recorrer fácilmente desde Musitu (793 m) para subir, finalmente, por un sendero a la elevada aldea de Erroitegi (952 m)

La cima queda enmarcada entre los puertos de Santa Lucia (832 m), que une Uribarri-Jauregi con Maeztu, y el paso de San Juan (1054 m), encima de Erroeta/Onraita (967 m), que ostenta el título del pueblo más elevado de la provincia

En la iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Alaiza/Alaitza (s.XIII) se descubrieron unas enigmáticas pinturas que desconciertan a los expertos en arte y que podrían datar del s.XIV y que presentan una temática tan diversa y única como sorprendente

Mi ascensión

Bonita ruta que, aunque tiene al monte Santa Elena (1111 m) como objetivo, pasa por muchas otras cimas de más de 1000 metros. La ruta es un poco larga pero fácil de hacer

La marcha comienza en el pueblo de Musitu, donde hay un amplio aparcamiento a la entrada del pueblo según se viene de Maeztu o Cicujano. Atravesamos el pueblo hacia el bosque, pasando por una primera puerta metálica. En esta primera parte del camino, de unos 2 kilómetros, se camina tranquilamente por un bosque de haya y roble y sin apenas desnivel. Se escucha el arroyo Musitu a la derecha mientras el valle se cierra delante de nosotros. En este bosque encontramos un desvío un poco escondido que lleva al antiguo molino de agua de Igoroin. Menos visible es el antiguo poblado de Igoroin, indicado algo más adelante con unos carteles informativos



Para llegar a la cascada del arroyo Musitu hay que tomar antes un desvío a la izquierda que no es muy visible. Está indicado en el track de la ruta. La cascada es una gran visera de roca por la que cae el agua a una poza. La visera permite pasar por detrás de la cascada, cuando hay agua, claro. La cascada está muy metida en el bosque y no se ve hasta que llegas justo a ella. Pasada la cascada hay un mirador con una preciosa vista sobre el valle



Tras este descanso en el mirador continuamos hacia el pueblo más elevado de la provincia de Álava, Onraita. Para acceder a él hay que cruzar un hayedo-robledal antes de llegar a uno prado con caballos donde hay que pasar por dos vallas electrificadas para control de ganado. No es difícil pasarlas, tan sólo hay que coger el puño de goma, soltar el gancho metálico y pasar la cerca sin tocar los cables



Una vez que pasamos Onraita nos estaremos acercando a la cornisa de la sierra de Iturrieta, en las proximidades del puerto de San Juan. Nuestro camino se dirige hacia la despejada cima del monte Soil (1108 m), un poco al Oeste de ese puerto. Pasado el Soil, nos metemos de nuevo en bosque ya en dirección al monte Santa Elena. Este bosque es precioso, por una senda estrecha y por una zona muy verde. Algunos ejemplares de hayas son espectaculares. La cima del Santa Elena (1111 m) tiene un vértice geodésico, una horrible cruz verde y un pequeño buzón. Apenas tiene vistas porque está dentro del bosque



Abandonamos el Santa Elena y empezamos a descender hacia la siguiente parada, el Basasakan (1046 m), pasando por el conocido puerto de Luzkando. Este promontorio rocoso tiene ya alguna vista más sobre la llanada. Dejando siempre la alambrada a nuestra derecha, ascendemos hacia el monte Larrintxo (1056 m) y, a continuación, al Zorrikobaso (1083 m). En estas dos cimas se encuentra la zona de mayor pendiente de toda la ruta. Aquí es mencionable el hecho de que está el campo de cultivo más elevado de Álava. Tras el Zorrikobaso, la última cima es el Marabileta (1088 m), inconfundible por la horrible antena que existe en la cima

Descendemos por un pinar desde el Marabileta hacia el puerto Blanco. Unos metros antes del puerto hay que desviarse a la izquierda, por un sendero que no se ve a simple vista si no se presta atención

Prácticamente ya no hay nada mencionable hasta llegar a Musitu. La pista es fácil y los desvíos son muy identificables. Sólo es curiosa la existencia de un punto de alimentación de buitres gestionado por la Diputación Foral. Es un lugar en el que se ven varios cadáveres de caballos, burros o similar. Huele bastante mal así que no tiene demasiado interés. También es visible la horrible herida que la cantera Laminoria ha hecho en el entorno

En general, toda la ruta transcurre por caminos o sendas más o menos anchos pero siempre muy visibles, desde pistas forestales de 4x4 a senderos estrechos sólo aptos para bicis o personas. La pendiente en ningún caso es elevada, salvo en las inmediaciones del monte Larrintxo y el Zorrikobaso, en donde hay desniveles del 25% en tramos muy cortos. La orientación no es tampoco problemática salvo en los dos puntos señalados en los que hay que estar pendiente de no desviarse de la ruta

My ascent

Nice route that, although it has the Santa Elena mountain (1111 m) as a goal, passes through many other peaks over 1000 meters. The route is a bit long but easy to do

The walk starts in the village of Musitu, where there is a spacious parking lot at the entrance of the village coming from Maeztu or Cicujano. We cross the village towards the forest, passing through a first metal gate. In this first part of the trail, about 2 kilometers, you walk quietly through a forest of beech and oak and with little slope. We can hear the Musitu stream on the right while the valley closes in front of us. In this forest we find a little hidden detour that leads to the old water mill of Igoroin. Less visible is the ancient settlement of Igoroin, indicated a little further on with some informative posters



To get to the Musitu stream waterfall you must first take a detour to the left that is not very visible. It is indicated on the track of the route. The waterfall is a large rock overhang through which water falls into a pond. The visor allows you to pass behind the waterfall, when there is water, of course. The waterfall is deep in the forest and is not visible until you get right up to it. Past the waterfall there is a viewpoint with a beautiful view over the valley



After this break at the viewpoint we continue to the highest village in the province of Álava, Onraita. To access it you have to cross a beech-oak grove before reaching a meadow with horses where you have to pass through two electrified fences for livestock control. It is not difficult to pass them, you just have to take the rubber fist, release the metal hook and pass the fence without touching the wires



Once we pass Onraita we will be approaching the cornice of the Iturrieta mountain range, in the vicinity of the San Juan pass. Our trail heads towards the open summit of Soil mountain (1108 m), a little to the west of that pass. Past the Soil, we get back into the forest and in the direction of Mount Santa Elena. This forest is beautiful, through a narrow path and a very green area. Some of the beech trees are spectacular. The summit of Santa Elena (1111 m) has a geodesic vertex, a horrible green cross and a small mailbox. It has hardly any views because it is inside the forest



We leave the Santa Elena and start descending towards the next stop, the Basasakan (1046 m), passing through the well-known Luzkando pass. This rocky promontory already has some more views over the plain. Leaving the wire fence to our right, we ascend to Mount Larrintxo (1056 m) and then to Zorrikobaso (1083 m). In these two summits we find the steepest area of the whole route. Here it is worth mentioning the fact that it is the highest crop field in Alava. After the Zorrikobaso, the last peak is the Marabileta (1088 m), unmistakable for the horrible antenna that exists on the top

We descend through a pine forest from Marabileta towards the Blanco pass. A few meters before the pass you have to turn off to the left, along a path that is not visible to the unaware if you do not pay attention

There is practically nothing to mention until you reach Musitu. The track is easy and the detours are very identifiable. The only curious thing is the existence of a feeding point for vultures managed by the Diputación Foral. It is a place where you can see several carcasses of horses, donkeys or similar. It smells pretty bad so it is of little interest. It is also visible the horrible wound that the quarry Laminoria has made in the surroundings

In general, the entire route runs along tracks or paths more or less wide but always very visible, from 4x4 forest tracks to narrow paths only suitable for bikes or people. The slope is never steep, except in the vicinity of Mount Larrintxo and Zorrikobaso, where there are slopes of 25% in very short sections. The orientation is not problematic either, except in the two indicated points where you have to be careful not to deviate from the route
