According to mendikat.net, there are almost 250 mountains of 1,000 meters or more in Alava. This is Mugarriluze, 1111 meters high
Description of the mountain (extracted from www.mendikat.net):
This mountain of the Elgea mountain range is the boundary between Araba and Gipuzkoa, in the same watershed. This, together with the big rock or mugarri of sandstone that we find in the vicinity of the summit more than justify its name of Muga-(h)arri-luze (Mojón Largo)
Mugarriluze is a menhir of 2.13 m in height and width between 1.65 m at the base and 1 m at the top. The thickness of the slab ranges between 0.20 and 0.27 m. It has been used as a muga (as the name itself indicates). On its surface there are engravings and grooves, specifically a cross. It was not discovered until June 8, 1980 by the ethnographer L. P. Santiago. It is located slightly leaning on the slope towards the Alabita pass (ED50 30T 539963 4757144) (1098 m), and it constitutes the M-3 route between Barrundia (Araba) and Eskoriatza (Gipuzkoa)
Located to the S. of the hole (polje) of Alabita (966 m) its access does not present any difficulty either from Araba or from Gipuzkoa, although the accesses from this last territory are longer and have a greater slope
The location of the summit is problematic, as the upper part of the mountain has hardly any relief and there is the possibility of visiting several peaks, although it is rare for the climber to stop at the highest (1111 m) (ED50 540343 4756801), on which the wind turbine marked with the number 5 sits. On the other hand, the elevation that is usually climbed is the NW elevation, slightly lower (1108 m) (ED50 30T 540027 4757021), approximately equidistant between wind turbines No. 1 and No. 2. This fact cannot be attributed to the greater proximity to the prehistoric monolith, since it was not discovered until 1980, nor to a greater distance from the line of wind turbines, since the wind farm has not been in that place either, since it was inaugurated in 2000. In 1994 a vertex of the fourth order network of Euskadi was placed very close to the place where the wind turbine number 1 of the line (ED50 30T 539982 47570568)(1105 m) would later be located. Therefore, the summit that is usually climbed is, in reality, the NW forepart of Mugarriluze, and not the true main elevation (1111 m), since the mountaineers considered that this was the highest or perhaps the most suitable place at that time to erect the mailbox
On the other hand, if we follow the cairns that determine the territorial demarcation between Barrundia (Araba) and Eskoriatza (Gipuzkoa) we observe that the summit is inside Barrundia and, therefore, it seems to be only Araba. Near the main elevation (1111 m) is located the mugarri M-4 and observing the position and the line marked on the M-5 we can deduce this circumstance. It should be noted that, curiously, the new cairns are slightly displaced with respect to the old ones (still present), to the detriment of Barrundia
My ascent
Simple route that begins in the village of Elguea. In this village there are several places to leave the car although there is not a parking lot as such
After crossing the village to its northeast end, we begin the walk by asphalt road until we reach what appears to be a neighborhood of Elguea called Arrugue. Here begins a comfortable concrete track that takes us to the pine forest. From the beginning we can see the wind farm of Elguea, whose crest we are going to climb. After a first detour along a path on the right, we enter a dirt and grassy forest track
The ascent is not complicated in terms of terrain or orientation. We always walk along a trail that is more or less wide but very visible. There are sections with average gradient from 20% to 27%. It is an easy climb, with patience and determination. We continue through the pine forest until we reach an elevation of 980 meters, where we leave the forest to see ourselves just below the wind turbines
We follow the trail until we reach the windmills, between WTG 10 and 11. As is logical, the wind up here can be strong as soon as we reach the ridge. And if the day is cold, it will be a very cold wind. It should be remembered that a wind farm can involve significant risk if there is ice on the blades. This ice can break off in pieces of dozens of kilos and fly long distances thrown by the centrifugal force of the rotor
When you reach the windmills you have to turn west because the top is next to wind turbine number 5. I locate the top here because it is the highest point although there is hardly any relief and the top is not distinguishable. It also doesn't help that there are no landmarks. In fact, the milestones that mark the summit are not here but between windmills 1 and 2. Next to windmill 1 we find a geodesic point and a little to the north, the menhir of Mugarriluze. From the top we can see Vitoria to the south and the Ullíbarri-Gamboa reservoir. To the north we have the province of Guipúzcoa but what stands out above all is the Anboto, in Vizcaya
To descend we have to reach the Orbe-Putzua col, which is next to the wind turbine 17. We walk up to it and find the descent trail. It has no complications although the dirt floor can be quite uneven due to the water streams
In short, it is not a spectacular peak and the fact that it is in the middle of a wind farm is not pleasant either. The route is easy although it requires a little bit of effort because of the slope at some point of the ascent. What seems to be the highest point is not signposted while the summit milestones are elsewhere
