Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es El Fraile de 1111 metros

En las inmediaciones de esta cumbre de la sierra de Arkamu o Arkamo, se abre la cueva del mismo nombre.

Mi ascensión

Esta ruta sale del pueblo de Barrón y asciende hasta el pico conocido como El Fraile. En el pueblo, junto a la iglesia, hay lugar para aparcar dos o tres coches

Inmediatamente tras salir del pueblo comienza el ascenso. Va a ser una larga pendiente de 3100 metros de longitud y con un desnivel medio del 15%. Parte de ella trascurre atravesando un bosque de carrasca perenne, característico de esta zona. Al alcanzar los 1000 metros de altitud ya se llega al final del bosque y el camino sigue despejado hasta la propia cima. Toda la ruta va a ser siempre por camino 4x4 de grava o piedras, muy fácil de seguir

A la mitad del ascenso pasamos por el pozo de Los Escaños el cual, más que un pozo, parece la ciénaga de Shrek. Al llegar al desvío a la cima, hay que salirse de la senda y subir los últimos metros hasta la cumbre. Esta zona es kárstica y hay que tener cuidado de no tropezar entre las piedras. La subida no es muy fuerte y es fácil orientarse hacia arriba. Es un terreno despejado y con arbustos

La cima, curiosamente, tiene tres hitos, marcados cada uno con una gran piedra. El hito central, además, tiene los restos de una antena derribada hace años y que ninguna administración se ha molestado en retirar desde, al menos, 2016. Desde este promontorio el paisaje es muy bonito. Hacia el Norte se ven claramente las poblaciones de Arriano, Luna y Guillarte. Hacia el Sur se distinguen hasta cuatro sierras distintas. Hacia el Noroeste se presenta el farallón de roca que cierra el valle de Kuartango. En las inmediaciones parece que hay una cueva conocida como la cueva de El Fraile





La vuelta hasta Barrón es por el mismo camino que la subida

Nota: esta ruta, o parte de ella, es de ida y vuelta. Las indicaciones de los desvíos que se facilitan en el itinerario corresponden a la subida. Es decir, si el WPT marca “Izquierda”, es un desvío a la izquierda al subir, pero a la derecha al bajar

My ascent

This route leaves the village of Barrón and climbs up to the peak known as El Fraile. In the village, next to the church, there is a place to park two or three cars

Immediately after leaving the village the ascent begins. It will be a long slope of 3100 meters long and with an average gradient of 15%. Part of it goes through an evergreen oak forest, characteristic of this area. At an altitude of 1000 meters you reach the end of the forest and the trail continues clear to the summit itself. The whole route will always be on a 4x4 trail of gravel or stones, very easy to follow

In the middle of the ascent we pass by the well of Los Escaños which, more than a well, looks like Shrek's swamp. When you reach the detour to the top, you have to leave the path and walk up the last few meters to the summit. This area is karstic and you have to be careful not to trip over the stones. The climb is not very steep and it is easy to find your way up. It is a clear terrain with bushes

The summit, curiously, has three milestones, each marked with a large stone. The central milestone, in addition, has the remains of an antenna that was downed years ago and that no administration has bothered to remove since 2016, at least. From this promontory the landscape is very beautiful. To the north, the villages of Arriano, Luna and Guillarte are clearly visible. To the south you can distinguish up to four different mountain ranges. To the northwest is the rocky outcrop that closes the valley of Kuartango. In the vicinity there seems to be a cave known as the cave of El Fraile





The return to Barrón is by the same trail as the ascent

Note: this route, or part of it, is a round trip. The indications of the detours provided in the itinerary correspond to the ascent. That is to say, if the WPT marks "Left", it is a detour to the left on the way up, but to the right on the way down
