Alava1000+ 1095 m Lazkueta SW

Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Lazkueta SW, de 1095 metros

Descripción del monte (extraído de www.mendikat.net):

Desconocida pero interesante cumbre de la Sierra de Entzia por la soledad de sus parajes cubiertas por densos hayedos en el agreste terreno de lapiaz. Es la única cumbre significativa de la sierra que se halla en el interior de su gran sinclinal suspendido, ya que todas las demás cumbres quedan en los bordes, comienzo de los pliegues anticlinales destruidos por los agentes geológicos. La cumbre Este se llama Aznabarreta (1074 m)

Señalar que el buzón de Lazkueta no se encuentra en el punto culminante de la montaña (ED50 30T 557976 4742045) sino en una estribación (1087 m) a unos 600 m al S.SW de la misma. Debido a la colocación de un buzón en ella y la distancia que las separa hemos considerado que no necesariamente se ascenderán el mismo día y son objetivos montañeros diferentes

Al Norte de la cumbre se sitúa las Cuevas de Guaran o Iguaran (1040 m), algo difíciles de localizar entre las hayas y el lapiaz. Su recorrido completo no llega al kilómetro y son fáciles de explorar teniendo que pasar por varías gateras para llegar a la bóveda final donde se observan interesantes precipitaciones de carbonato de calcio a modo de cortinas o banderas

Además del interés espeleológico, también es una zona de notable valor arqueológico. El menhir de Itaida (957 m) se enclava en el raso del mismo nombre, junto a un dolmen y varios túmulos (ED50 30T 559018 4740507). Se halla al SE de Lazkueta (1124 m), junto a la pista que une el puerto de Opakua con la carretera del puerto de Urbasa. Además del mencionado existen muchos restos más: El cromlech de Mendiluze, el menhir de Lekuona, los dólmenes de Legaire, los dólmenes de Bujalaran y Larrazabal, el túmulo de Urkibi o el que cumbra la cima de Murube, entre otros

Fue puntuable para el catálogo de los cien montes del año 1950 ocupando la pos. 33 de los "Montes de Álava" con la denominación Azkueta y altitud 1.087 m. Los mapas de la época señalan la cota 1.087 con el nombre Azcueta, pese a que se observa no ser la culminación, que quedaría al NE de la misma con cota 1.105 m

Mi ascensión

Vistosa ruta que parte del pueblo alavés de Vicuña. Existe un depósito de agua a unos 800 metros pasado el pueblo, sobre la ruta, y es donde dejé aparcado el coche. No sé si es muy correcto. Caben un par de coches, a lo sumo

La subida hasta el puerto de Vicuña es sencilla y sin dificultad por desnivel, orientación o tipo de suelo. El día de mi caminata había muchísimo barro pero eso es un hecho circunstancial; la ruta es sencilla en condiciones normales. Una vez que se ha alcanzado el puerto, el paisaje cambia: dejamos unas pistas herbosas en un bosque muy abierto para adentrarnos en un precioso hayedo, mucho más denso. Podría decirse que el cambio se produce al cruzar una puerta de madera y realizar un giro a la izquierda



La senda deja de ser evidente y hay que caminar entre las hayas siguiendo el GPS. Esto no supone ningún problema porque es un bosque bastante limpio. Hay también enormes rocas cubiertas de musgo que conforman como si fuera un laberinto. Esta es una zona muy agradable de transitar, sin apenas pendiente. Es curioso la enorme cantidad de grandes hayas caídas en el suelo



Así llegaremos hasta la cima del Lazkueta SW, que nos reserva una sorpresa: el nombre que aparece en el hito no es correcto. Aparece el nombre Lazkueta pero el Lazkueta es otro monte de mayor altura que está en las proximidades pero no es éste. Este es el Lazkueta SW. Quitando esto, el hito cimero es una gran lápida de piedra, con vistas sobre el valle. El entorno es un hayedo y no hay demasiada vista panorámica



El retorno hasta el puerto de Vicuña se realiza a través del mismo bosque, entre las grandes rocas. Al final llegaremos a las inmediaciones de las ruinas de unas cabañas y enseguida encontramos la puerta de madera que nos lleva de vuelta a Vicuña por el mismo camino por el que hemos subido

Nota: esta ruta, o parte de ella, es de ida y vuelta. Las indicaciones de los desvíos que se facilitan en el itinerario corresponden a la subida. Es decir, si el WPT marca “Izquierda”, es un desvío a la izquierda al subir, pero a la derecha al bajar

Unknown but interesting summit of the Sierra de Entzia for the solitude of its spots covered by dense beech forests in the rugged terrain of lapiaz. It is the only significant summit of the mountain range that is in the interior of its great suspended syncline, since all the other summits are on the edges, the beginning of the anticlinal folds destroyed by geological agents. The east summit is called Aznabarreta (1074 m)

Note that the Lazkueta letterbox is not located at the summit of the mountain (ED50 30T 557976 4742045) but in a spur (1087 m) about 600 m S.SW of it. Due to the placement of a letterbox on it and the distance that separates them we have considered that they will not necessarily be ascended on the same day and are different mountaineering objectives

To the north of the summit is the Cuevas de Guaran or Iguaran (1040 m), somewhat difficult to locate among the beeches and lapiaz. Its complete route does not reach the 1 km and they are easy to explore having to go through several caves to reach the final vault where interesting precipitations of calcium carbonate can be observed as curtains or flags

In addition to the speleological interest, it is also an area of remarkable archaeological value. The menhir of Itaida (957 m) is located in the area of the same name, next to a dolmen and several tumuli (ED50 30T 559018 4740507). It is located to the SE of Lazkueta (1124 m), next to the track that joins the Opakua pass with the road to the Urbasa pass. My ascent

An attractive route that starts from the village of Vicuña in Alava. There is a water deposit about 800 meters past the village, on the route, and it is where I left the car parked. I do not know if it is very correct. There is room for a couple of cars, at the most

The climb up to the Vicuña pass is easy and without difficulty due to slope, orientation or type of ground. The day of my hike there was a lot of mud but that is a circumstantial fact; the route is easy in normal conditions. Once the pass is reached, the landscape changes: we leave some grassy tracks in a very open forest to enter a beautiful beech forest, much denser. You could say that the change occurs when you cross a wooden gate and make a left turn



The trail is no longer obvious and you have to walk through the beech trees following the GPS. This is not a problem because it is a fairly clean forest. There are also huge rocks covered with moss that form a maze. This is a very pleasant area to walk through, with hardly any slope. It is curious the huge amount of large beech trees fallen on the ground



Thus, we reach the top of Lazkueta SW, which has a surprise waiting for us: the name that appears on the milestone is not correct. The name Lazkueta appears but Lazkueta is another mountain of higher altitude that is in the vicinity but it is not this one. This is Lazkueta SW. Apart from this, the summit landmark is a large stone slab, with views over the valley. The surrounding area is a beech forest and there is not much of a panoramic view



The return to the Vicuña pass is through the same forest, among the large rocks. At the end we will arrive near the ruins of some cabins and immediately we will find the wooden gate that takes us back to Vicuña by the same trail by which we have climbed

Note: this route, or part of it, is a round trip. The indications of the detours provided in the itinerary correspond to the ascent. That is to say, if the WPT marks "Left", it is a detour to the left on the way up, but to the right on the way down
