Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Azkorri, de 1094 metros

Mi ascensión

Preciosa ruta que sale del pueblo alavés de Jokano. En este pueblo, junto al cementerio, hay sitio para aparcar tres o cuatro coches. Desde este punto ya se ven las dos grandes antenas que nos marcan la llegada a la plataforma superior de esta sierra de Arkamu, a través del Portillo de Oncejo

Nada más empezar a caminar entramos en un bosque de pinos, hayas y robles que nos va a acompañar hasta el Portillo de Oncejo. La pista es fácil de seguir pero tiene una pendiente que se va a mantener constante en el entorno del 18% hasta llegar al portillo, 2500 metros más adelante. En un momento dado hay que abandonar la pista ancha y tomar una senda más estrecha que sale por la izquierda (ver WPT y foto) pero, poco después, retornamos a senda ancha

El bosque y la subida se terminan al llegar al Portillo de Oncejo, dando paso a una fantástica y preciosa planicie verde, muy fácil de caminar y que nos muestra las dos grandes antenas, conocidas como los repetidores de Montemayor. Este páramo no tiene senda visible pero es sencillo orientarse hacia las antenas. En algún tramo se camina muy cerca del cortado así que hay que ir con precaución en condiciones de niebla. Al acercarse a la primera de las antenas, nos topamos con una pista de piedra para 4x4, para los técnicos que dan servicio a las antenas. Desde la antena 1 nos orientamos hacia la antena 2, detrás de la cual se halla nuestra cima

El Azkorri sólo cuenta con un hito de rocas apiladas y consiste en un promontorio rocoso y herboso. El entorno paisajístico es encantador pero la cima en sí no tiene mayor comentario



La bajada nos lleva hasta interceptar la pista de 4x4 mencionada anteriormente. Pista que se abandona poco después para adentrarse de nuevo por el páramo kárstiko y herboso, sin senda, en dirección a la segunda cima del día, el Cotorrillo (1084 m). Es fácil orientarse si se busca el vértice geodésico que hay en esta cima

Una vez superado el Cotorrilo y tras cruzar un muro de rocas, alcanzamos una relajada pista forestal 4x4, no muy marcada, por una extensa campa verde bastante plana. Caminar por esta zona es una delicia y nos conduce, tras un corto ascenso, a la tercera cima de la ruta, el monte Santa Cruz (965 m), con un bonito buzón montañero

La bajada desde el Santa Cruz nos lleva hasta el Portillo Picote. Los primeros metros de bajada hay que hacerlos con calma y cuidado, buscando el mejor paso porque es bastante pronunciada. Es mejor bajar inicialmente dejando la alambrada a la derecha y, a continuación, saltar la alambrada. Una vez superado el portillo, nos metemos en una zona boscosa caminado por una estrecha senda de piedras sueltas y resbaladizas. Con la precaución debida, bajar por este sendero es una maravilla hasta llegar a Ullívarri Cuartango. En este pueblo hay una ermita, la de San Quirico y Santa Julita, que merece una parada. Poco después se alcanza el punto donde se ha dejado el coche y se finaliza la ruta

En resumen, esta ruta me ha parecido fabulosa, aunque puede ser un poco larga. Hay paisajes de muchos tipos; páramo, bosque, cortado, etc y no tiene complicación orientación ni tipo de pista. En algún tramo la pendiente es algo elevada pero nada extenuante. Tiene bastantes zonas despejadas que pueden ser duras en verano con el sol

Nota: esta ruta, o parte de ella, es de ida y vuelta. Las indicaciones de los desvíos que se facilitan en el itinerario corresponden a la subida. Es decir, si el WPT marca “Izquierda”, es un desvío a la izquierda al subir, pero a la derecha al bajar

My ascent

Beautiful route that leaves from the Alavese village of Jokano. In this village, next to the cemetery, there is room to park three or four cars. From this point we can already see the two large antennas that mark the arrival to the upper platform of this mountain range of Arkamu, through the Portillo de Oncejo

As soon as we start walking we enter a forest of pines, beeches and oaks that will accompany us to the Portillo de Oncejo. The track is easy to follow but has a slope that will remain constant at around 18% until you reach the portillo, 2500 meters ahead. At a given moment we have to leave the wide track and take a narrower path that goes off to the left (see WPT and photo) but, shortly after, we return to the wide track

The forest and the climb end when we reach the Portillo de Oncejo, giving way to a fantastic and beautiful green plain, very easy to walk and that shows us the two large antennas, known as the Montemayor relays. This moor has no visible path but it is easy to find your way to the antennas. In some sections we walk very close to the cliff so we must be cautious in foggy conditions. When approaching the first antenna, we came across a stone track for 4x4, for the technicians who service the antennas. From antenna 1 we orient ourselves towards antenna 2, behind which is our summit

Azkorri has only one stacked rock milestone and consists of a rocky, grassy promontory. The scenic setting is charming but the summit itself is of little note



The descent leads us to intercept the 4x4 track mentioned above. This track is abandoned shortly after to go back into the grassy karst wasteland, without a path, towards the second peak of the day, the Cotorrillo (1084 m). It is easy to find your way if you look for the geodesic vertex on this peak

Once past the Cotorrilo and after crossing a rock wall, we reach a relaxed 4x4 forest track, not very marked, through an extense green field quite flat. Walking through this area is a delight and leads us, after a short climb, to the third peak of the route, Mount Santa Cruz (965 m), with a nice mountain mailbox

The descent from the Santa Cruz takes us to the Picote pass. The first few meters of descent must be done calmly and carefully, looking for the best step because it is quite steep. It is better to descend initially leaving the wire fence to the right and then jump the fence. Once over the pass, we get into a wooded area walking along a narrow trail of loose and slippery stones. With due caution, going down this path is wonderful until you reach Ullívarri Cuartango. In this village there is a hermitage, that of St. Quirico and St. Julita, which deserves a stop. Shortly after you reach the point where you left the car and the route ends

In summary, I found this route fabulous, although it can be a bit long. There are landscapes of many types; moor, forest, cut, etc. and it has no complicated orientation or type of track. In some sections the slope is a bit steep but nothing strenuous. It has many clear areas that can be hard in summer with the sun

Note: this route, or part of it, is a round trip. The indications of the detours provided in the itinerary correspond to the ascent. That is to say, if the WPT marks "Left", it is a detour to the left on the way up, but to the right on the way down
