Alava1000+ 1048 m Luquillo

Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Luquillo, de 1048 metros

Descripción del monte (extraído de www.mendikat.net):

Paraje de la sierra de Arkamo entre Ereabasterra (1103 m) y Peña Colorada (1136 m) con prominencia cero que ni siquiera se le puede denominar cumbre ya que se encuentra en la parte más baja entre ambas cimas, pero como en los mapas figura como cima Luquillo la reseñamos

El término Luquillo referencia, de modo general, al circo montañoso en el que se ubica un manantial (fuente Luquillo) y por el que corre el arroyo Vadillo. Este paraje es conocido como Rincón de Luquillo

Mi ascensión

Breve ascensión a esta peculiar cima, si es que se le puede denominar así. Es un bonito paseo

Se sale del pueblo de Arriano, donde hay un amplio aparcamiento. Dejamos el pueblo por una pista de hormigón que sale hacia el Norte y desde este momento ya se ve el enorme y precioso farallón al que nos vamos a acercar. Al cabo de pocos metros dejamos esa pista tan artificial y nos desviaremos por la izquierda por otra pista 4x4 de tierra. Esa es la pista que nos llevará arriba, a través de un bosque no muy espeso de pinos y hayas

Hasta los 1070 metros la pendiente ronda el 20% pero es corta y no es fatigosa. Aquí se termina el bosque y entramos en terreno abierto. Tras alcanzar el portillo de Melaria, el punto más elevado de la ruta (1090 m), el terreno empieza descender. Y es que la cima del Luquillo (1048 m) no es una cima sino un lugar entre otras cumbres dos mayores, Ereabasterra (1103 m) y Peña Colorada (1136 m). Es como si fuera un collado. Supongo que lo llaman cima por algún motivo histórico pero está claro que no lo es. Está marcada con un hito de piedras. Las vistas sobre el bosque que hay abajo, donde está la fuente Luquillo, y más allá merecen el pequeño esfuerzo de subir hasta aquí. La cima está en el borde del farallón y pude soplar bastante viento. El lugar es muy natural y justifica el paseo



El regreso se hace por el mismo camino, atravesando pastizales que pueden estar muy animado con vacas, terneros, potros y caballos. También se distinguen con facilidad grandes aves volando por las paredes del farallón

Nota: esta ruta, o parte de ella, es de ida y vuelta. Las indicaciones de los desvíos que se facilitan en el itinerario corresponden a la subida. Es decir, si el WPT marca “Izquierda”, es un desvío a la izquierda al subir, pero a la derecha al bajar

A spot in the Arkamo mountain range between Ereabasterra (1103 m) and Peña Colorada (1136 m) with a zero prominence that cannot even be called a summit since it is located in the lowest part between the two peaks, but as it appears on the maps as Luquillo summit, it is mentioned here

The term Luquillo refers, in general, to the mountainous cirque in which a spring is located (Luquillo spring) and through which the Vadillo stream flows. This place is known as Luquillo's corner

My ascent

Short ascent to this peculiar peak, if it can be called that. It is a nice walk

We leave the village of Arriano, where there is a spacious parking lot. We leave the village by a concrete track that goes to the north and from this moment we can already see the huge and beautiful cliff that we are going to approach. After a few meters we leave this artificial track and turn off to the left onto another 4x4 dirt track. That is the track that will take us up, through a not very dense forest of pines and beeches

Up to 1070 meters the slope is around 20% but it is short and not tiring. Here the forest ends and we enter open terrain. After reaching the Melaria pass, the highest point of the route (1090 m), the terrain begins to descend. And is that the top of Luquillo (1048 m) is not a summit but a place between two other major peaks, Ereabasterra (1103 m) and Peña Colorada (1136 m). It is as if it were a col. I guess they call it a summit for some historical reason but it is clearly not. It is marked with a stone milestone. The views over the forest below, where the Luquillo spring is, and beyond are worth the small effort to climb this far. The top is on the edge of the cliff and I could blow quite a bit of wind. The place is very natural and justifies the walk



The return is on the same trail, crossing pastures that can be very lively with cows, calves, foals and horses. You can also easily spot large birds flying along the walls of the cliff

Note: this route, or part of it, is a round trip. The indications of the detours provided in the itinerary correspond to the ascent. That is to say, if the WPT marks "Left", it is a detour to the left on the way up, but to the right on the way down
