Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Atxamuño, de 1022 metros

Al oeste de la cima de Peña del Santo, nos encontramos con Atxamuño, un bloque kárstico separado por un profundo canal que discurre dirección norte sur. Esta cima se desprende del bloque rocoso de Peña del Santo

Mi ascensión

Entretenida ascensión que se inicia en el pueblo de San Román de Campezo. El coche se puede dejar en el pueblo pero no hay aparcamiento público

Para ascender a esta cima primero hay que subir hasta la pared rocosa que se distingue desde el pueblo. Esta subida es sencilla y una posibilidad fácil es hacerlo a través del collado de La Casilla, saliendo desde la parte superior del pueblo por una senda de tierra que atraviesa un robledal

En el collado se gira a la izquierda, hacia la ermita de San Román. Este segundo tramo ya no es por bosque pero la pista sigue siendo cómoda. La ermita es una oquedad en la propia roca, protegida con una verja

Tras visitar la ermita, caminamos hacia el Oeste, unos 120 metros, manteniéndonos junto a la pared hasta el canal que separa la Peña del Santo-Peña Arregui y la cima del Atxamuño. La cruz verde de la Peña del Santo-Peña Arregui es bien visible sobre nuestras cabezas. Al llegar al canal del Atxamuño, la cima queda a nuestra izquierda. Esta es la parte más entretenida de la ruta porque vamos a tener que trepar por la roca unos pocos metros hasta la cima

La cima está en unos de los promontorios rocosos y hay que buscar el paso más cómodo entre piedras y arbustos porque no hay senda. No es difícil pero requiere una mínima precaución para no tropezar o meter el pie en alguna grieta; es una zona kárstica y hay muchos agujeros. Las rocas están muy bien afianzadas y es sencillo encontrar buenos agarres para las manos. Tras un pequeño tramo, se encuentra el hito de rocas que marca la cumbre. Es posible que haya que subir y bajar alguno de estos promontorios rocosos hasta llegar al punto más elevado de ellos



Las vistas desde aquí se caracterizan por la proximidad de la Peña del Santo-Peña Arregui, al Este, y por la gran planicie don de se encuentra San Román de Campezo, al Sur. La bajada de la cima hasta el canal tampoco es complicada si se toman las debidas precauciones para no tropezar

De vuelta al canal, se puede elegir descender directamente a San Román o bien acercarse al mirador que hay a unos 550 metros y que muestra el enorme bosque de Izki. Desde el mirador se retrocede hacia el canal del Atxamuño y desde allí, sencillo descenso hasta San Román

En resumen, tranquila y corta ruta, sin complicaciones de orientación o pendiente, con el atractivo de tener que trepar hasta la cima

My ascent

Entertaining ascent that starts in the village of San Román de Campezo. The car can be left in the village but there is no public parking

To ascend to this peak, you must first climb up to the rocky wall that can be seen from the village. This ascent is simple and an easy possibility is to do it through the col of La Casilla, leaving from the upper part of the village by a dirt path that crosses an oak grove

At the col we turn left towards the San Román hermitage. This second section is no longer through forest but the track is still comfortable. The hermitage is a cave in the rock itself, protected by a gate

After visiting the hermitage, we walk to the west, about 120 meters, maintaining ourselves next to the wall until the channel that separates the Peña del Santo-Peña Arregui and the summit of Atxamuño. The green cross of the Peña del Santo-Peña Arregui is well visible above our heads. When we reach the Atxamuño channel, the summit is on our left. This is the most entertaining part of the route because we will have to clamber the rock some meters to the top

The summit is on one of the rocky promontories and you have to look for the most comfortable passage between stones and bushes because there is no path. It is not difficult but requires a minimum of caution to avoid tripping or putting your foot in a crack; it is a karst area and there are many holes. The rocks are very well consolidated and it is easy to find good hand holds. After a short stretch, there is a rock cairn marking the summit. You may have to climb up and down some of these rocky promontories until you reach the highest point on them



The views from here are characterized by the proximity of the Peña del Santo-Peña Arregui, to the east, and the large plain where San Román de Campezo is located, to the south. The descent from the summit to the channel is not complicated if you take the necessary precautions to avoid stumbling

Back to the channel, you can choose to descend directly to San Román or go to the viewpoint that is about 550 meters away and that shows the huge Izki forest. From the viewpoint you go back to the Atxamuño channel and from there, easy descent to San Román

In short, quiet and short route, without complications of orientation or slope, with the attraction of having to clamber to the top
