Alava1000+ 1091 m Atxuri

Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Atxuri, de 1091 metros

Entre los montañeros se han tenido como sinónimo Larredez y Atxuri para referirse a una misma cima, poco prominente, en el largo tramo del escarpe de los montes de Iturrieta, que mirando siempre a La Llanada, enlaza las cumbres de Santa Elena (1110 m) y Arrigorrista (1149 m). Aunque son parajes contiguos, son sin embargo, lugares diferenciados. En el cuadernos de toponimia de la Montaña Alavesa (vol.2), de González de Salazar, ya se hacen constar Larredez y Achuri como términos distintos. La ubicación del vértice geodésico, que recibió el nombre de Achuri, pudo originar estas variaciones, como ha ocurrido en otros casos. De hecho la terminología El Mojón y Mojonblanco yacen en la existencia de esa señal

Hay un leve portillo de la sierra que se llama Puerto de Larredez (1076 m), y que sería el origen de la denominación. Algunos mapas se refieren a este paso como Puerto de Alangua, que, en realidad, se sitúa aún más al E, antes de Arrigorrista. Esta pequeña escotadura separaría las dos cumbres: Al W Larredez (1104 m), más elevada, y Atxuri (1091 m), que es algo menor. Esta última está más vegetada que la anterior en la actualidad. De este modo el conjunto de pequeñas elevaciones que se interponen entre el puerto de San Juan y el puerto de Alangua serían, en orden: Peña del Cura (1067 m), Peña Redonda (1071 m), Katarri (1086 m), Larredez (1104 m), Atxuri (1091 m) y Peña de Alangua (1089 m)

Sobre la cota de Atxuri (1091 m) ha existido una estela funeraria discoidal que en la actualidad está en propiedad del museo de arqueología de Álava (Bibat) y catalogada con el nombre de Estela de Atxun o Atxuneko Hilarria. El nombre podría tener origen en el escarpe blanquecino que exhibe el peñascal

Mi ascensión

Sencilla caminata al monte Atxuri, uno de los muchos que se asoman desde la sierra de Iturrieta sobre el valle de Sakana. Más que una ascensión, esta ruta es un paseo porque no hay más que 180 metros de desnivel

Se sale del pueblo de Roitegui, a unos 950 metros de altitud. No hay aparcamiento público así que hay que dejar el coche donde no moleste a los vecinos

La ruta no tiene ningún problema de orientación ni de pendientes ni de tipo de terreno. La mayor parte se realiza por pista forestal de tierra y grava. Hay alguna zona en la que se pasa por un pequeño grupo de árboles con algún arbusto pero nada complicado. En las zonas de campo abierto se puede seguir el rumbo a partir de las indicaciones del GPS

La cima consiste en un montón de piedras, sin ninguna señalización adicional. Se tienen vistas de Salvatierra y de la autovía Vitoria-Pamplona. Es una cornisa herbosa y descubierta



La ruta de vuelta es prácticamente por el mismo sitio que la subida

Nota: esta ruta, o parte de ella, es de ida y vuelta. Las indicaciones de los desvíos que se facilitan en el itinerario corresponden a la subida. Es decir, si el WPT marca “Izquierda”, es un desvío a la izquierda al subir, pero a la derecha al bajar

Among mountaineers, Larredez and Atxuri have been used as synonyms to refer to the same peak, not very prominent, in the long stretch of the escarpment of the Iturrieta mountains, which, always looking towards La Llanada, links the summits of Santa Elena (1110 m) and Arrigorrista (1149 m). Although they are contiguous places, they are nevertheless differentiated places. In the notebooks of toponymy of the Montaña Alavesa (vol.2), by González de Salazar, Larredez and Achuri are already mentioned as distinct terms. The location of the geodesic vertex, which received the name of Achuri, could have caused these variations, as it has happened in other cases. In fact, the terminology El Mojón and Mojonblanco are based on the existence of this sign

There is a slight pass in the mountain range called Puerto de Larredez (1076 m), which would be the origin of the name. Some maps refer to this pass as Puerto de Alangua, which, in reality, is located even further to the E, before Arrigorrista. This small cleft separates the two peaks: Larredez (1104 m) to the W, which is higher, and Atxuri (1091 m), which is somewhat lower. The latter is more vegetated than the former at present. Thus the set of small elevations that stand between the port of San Juan and the port of Alangua would be, in order: Peña del Cura (1067 m), Peña Redonda (1071 m), Katarri (1086 m), Larredez (1104 m), Atxuri (1091 m) and Peña de Alangua (1089 m)

On the height of Atxuri (1091 m) there has existed a discoidal funerary stele that at the present time is in property of the museum of archaeology of Alava (Bibat) and catalogued with the name of Stele of Atxun or Atxuneko Hilarria. The name could have its origin in the whitish escarpment that exhibits the rocky outcrop

My ascent

Simple hike to the Atxuri mountain, one of the many that overlooks the Sakana valley from the Iturrieta mountain range. More than an ascent, this route is a walk because there are only 180 meters of difference in altitude

It starts from the village of Roitegui, at 950 meters of altitude. There is no public parking so it is necessary to leave the car where it does not bother the neighbors

The route does not have any problem of orientation, slopes or type of terrain. Most of it is on a dirt and gravel forest trail. There are some areas where you pass through a small group of trees with some bushes but nothing complicated. In the open country areas you can follow the course from the GPS indications

The summit consists of a pile of stones, without any additional marking. There are views of Salvatierra and the Vitoria-Pamplona highway. It is a grassy and uncovered ledge



The return route is practically the same as the ascent

Note: this route, or part of it, is a round trip. The indications of the detours provided in the itinerary correspond to the ascent. That is to say, if the WPT marks "Left", it is a detour to the left on the way up, but to the right on the way down
