Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Askitxa, de 1091 metros

Descripción del monte (extraído de www.mendikat.net):

Se trata de una cima en la vertiente norte de la Sierra de Santiago de Lókiz. El lugar idóneo para acceder a ella es la población de Larraona, perteneciente al valle de Améscoa Alta en la Merindad de Estella. El núcleo urbano se encuentra a una altitud de 770 m. y cuenta con una población de 112 habitantes. En el pueblo destacaremos dos edificios religiosos, La Parroquia de San Cristóbal y la Ermita de Nuestra Sra. de La Blanca, el primero se trata de una edificación románica del siglo XII, fortificada en el XV, dadas las reyertas con la vecina Kontrasta ya Alavesa. La ermita es muy posterior, siglo XVIII, llama la atención las lápidas romanas que se pueden ver en el exterior formando parte de los muros

Mi ascensión

Esta ruta no me ha entusiasmado; ni el trayecto ni la cima. El trayecto es bastante anodino y la cima no tiene vistas de ningún tipo

En cualquier caso, la marcha comienza en el bonito pueblo de Kontrasta, en Álava pero muy cerca de Navarra. Hay bastante sitio para aparcar en la plaza. El camino es siempre sencillo, por pista muy clara y sin mucha cobertura de árboles. Resulta aburrido por su sencillez. Ni la orientación es difícil, ni el tipo de pista ni la pendiente. Y además, salimos desde más de 800 metros de altitud así que el desnivel acumulado tampoco es mucho. Atención en el WPT “Triple cruce”: hay que seguir por la izquierda

Casi llegando a la cima hay que dejar la pista y pasar por debajo de una alambrada. Desde la alambrada hasta la cima la senda se estrecha pero no tiene dificultad. La cima no tiene visibilidad porque se trata de un promontorio arbolado. No existe hito ni buzón montañero



En el regreso desde la cima, tras el WPT “Bifurcación”, está lo más entretenido del camino, unos 250 metros de descenso “estilo jabalí” por un hayedo bastante cerrado y con ramas bajas. Hay que orientarse con el GPS porque no hay sendero visible. Tiene una pendiente del -30%

It is a peak on the northern slope of the Sierra de Santiago de Lókiz. The ideal place to access it is the town of Larraona, belonging to the valley of Améscoa Alta in the Merindad de Estella. The urban center is located at an altitude of 770 m. and has a population of 112 inhabitants. In the village we will emphasize two religious buildings, the Parish of San Cristobal and the Hermitage of Nuestra Sra. de La Blanca, the first is a Romanesque building of the XII century, fortified in the XV century, given the fights with the neighboring Kontrasta already Alavesa. The hermitage is very later, XVIII century, it calls the attention the Roman tombstones that can be seen in the exterior forming part of the walls

My ascent

This route did not excite me; neither the trail nor the summit. The walk is rather bland and the summit has no views whatsoever

In any case, the walk starts in the pretty village of Kontrasta, in Alava but very close to Navarra. There is plenty of parking space in the square. The trail is always straightforward, on a very clear track without much tree cover. It is boring because of its simplicity. Neither the orientation is difficult, nor the type of track or the slope. And besides, we start from more than 800 meters of altitude so the accumulated difference in altitude is not much either. Attention on the WPT "Triple crossing": we must continue on the left

Almost reaching the top you have to leave the track and go under a wire fence. From the fence to the top the path narrows but has no difficulty. The summit has no visibility because it is a wooded promontory. There is no milestone or mountain letterbox



On the way back from the summit, after the WPT "Bifurcation", is the most entertaining part of the trail, about 250 meters of descent "wild boar style" through a rather closed beech forest with low branches. It is necessary to orient yourself with the GPS because there is no visible trail. It has a slope of -30%
