Alava1000+ 1077 m Peña del Agujero

Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es la Peña del Agujero, de 1077 metros

Descripción del monte (extraído de www.mendikat.net):

No sé si cumbre se le puede llamar a esta pequeña roca dominante en el centro del barranco Palacios. En cualquier caso, un grupo de amigos de la naturaleza la señalizó con un pequeño buzón montañero en forma de cohete (que, por cierto, señala la altitud errónea de 965 metros, cuando la verdadera ronda los 1.100 metros). Es la Peña del Agujero, muy cerca y algo por debajo de la alargada cresta del monte Vallegrul (1226 m). Bajo la roca hay una oquedad que la atraviesa de lado a lado y que, es de suponer, es el origen de su denominación

En cualquier caso, la ascensión de este peñasco permite recorrer uno de los parajes más olvidados y desconocidos, no sólo del parque natural de Valderejo, sino, también de todo Álava, alejándonos de la conocida ruta al Vallegrul desde el centro de recepción del parque situado en Lalastra (913 m).

Mi ascensión

Es cierto que cuesta un poco llamar cima a esta roca porque está rodeada completamente por zonas más elevadas. En cualquier caso, su prominencia sobre el barranco Palacios es clara, sobre todo cuando se ve la peña desde lejos. Dicho lo anterior, añadiré que no son ni una ruta ni una cumbre espectaculares

Se puede dejar el coche en una pista agrícola, a las afueras del pueblo de Rufrancos. De ahí tenemos una primera parte aburrida y sin interés, hasta llegar a la ermita de la Virgen de Calleros. Esta primera parte discurre por pista agrícola, descubierta y con escasa pendiente. En la ermita hay unas mesas de picnic y una fuente



A partir de la ermita la ruta mejora un poco porque entramos en una zona algo más boscosa, pinos básicamente, sin llegar a ser muy cerrada. La pendiente va aumentando hasta el 27 % de los últimos 500 metros antes de la cima. La cima queda apartada a la derecha del camino que continúa hasta el Vallegrul



En lo alto de la peña hay un curioso buzón cimero de un grupo montañero de Miranda de Ebro quienes, sorprendentemente, se equivocaron al marcar la altitud de la peña de más de 100 metros. El nombre de Peña del Agujero seguramente se deba a una oquedad que la atraviesa en un flanco. Este detalle se puede comprobar desde la lejanía (WPT “Agujero”). Desde la cima se distingue perfectamente la subida que hemos hecho por el barranco





Aunque esta segunda parte de la ruta, después de la ermita, parece algo más boscosa, lo cierto es que toda la ruta es abierta y expuesta al sol. La orientación y el tipo de suelo, por otra parte, no presentan ninguna complicación

Nota: esta ruta, o parte de ella, es de ida y vuelta. Las indicaciones de los desvíos que se facilitan en el itinerario corresponden a la subida. Es decir, si el WPT marca “Izquierda”, es un desvío a la izquierda al subir, pero a la derecha al bajar

I don't know if you can call this small dominant rock in the centre of the Palacios ravine a summit. In any case, a group of friends of nature have marked it with a small rocket-shaped letterbox (which, by the way, indicates the erroneous altitude of 965 metres, when the true altitude is around 1,100 metres). It is the Peña del Agujero, very close to and just below the long ridge of the Vallegrul mountain (1226 m). Under the rock there is a hollow that crosses it from side to side and which, presumably, is the origin of its name

In any case, the ascent of this crag allows us to visit one of the most forgotten and unknown spots, not only in the Valderejo Natural Park, but also in the whole of Alava, taking us away from the well-known route to Vallegrul from the park's reception centre in Lalastra (913 m).

My ascent

It is true that it is a bit difficult to call this rock a summit because it is completely surrounded by higher areas. In any case, its prominence over the Palacios ravine is clear, especially when you see the rock from the distance. Having said the above, I will add that it is neither a spectacular route nor a spectacular summit

You can leave the car on a agricultural track, on the outskirts of the village of Rufrancos. From there we have a first boring and uninteresting part, until we reach the Virgen de Calleros hermitage. This first part runs along a agricultural track, uncovered and with little slope. In the hermitage there are some picnic tables and a fountain



From the hermitage the route improves a little because we enter a more wooded area, basically pines, without being very closed. The slope increases up to 27% in the last 500 meters before the summit. The summit is set aside to the right of the trail that continues to Vallegrul



At the top of the peak there is a curious summit letterbox of a mountaineering group from Miranda de Ebro who, surprisingly, made a mistake in marking the altitude of the crag of more than 100 meters. The name Peña del Agujero (Hole crag) is probably due to a hollow that crosses it on one side. This detail can be seen from a distance (WPT "Hole"). From the top you can perfectly distinguish the ascent we have made through the ravine





Although this second part of the route, after the hermitage, seems somewhat more wooded, the truth is that the entire route is open and exposed to the sun. The orientation and the type of ground, on the other hand, do not present any complication

Note: this route, or part of it, is a round trip. The indications of the detours provided in the itinerary correspond to the ascent. That is to say, if the WPT marks "Left", it is a detour to the left on the way up, but to the right on the way down
