Descripción del monte (extraído de www.mendikat.net):

Cumbre de la sierra de Entzia/Urbasa que queda cercana y al Este de Murube (1128 m). Es un pequeño pico rocoso en cuya cima existe un vértice geodésico al cual se accede por una escalerilla de hierro que permite acceder cómodamente a la peña. También se denomina Izluze, por contracción del término Aitzluze (Peña larga)

La cima marca el límite entre la Alavesa sierra de Entzia y la Navarra de Urbasa, quedando al Sur el valle de la Amezkoa, encajonado entre esta sierra y la de Lokiz

Esta cumbre se recogió en la primera edición del catálogo de Montes de Euskal Herria (1950), en la pos. 84 de los Montes de Araba con el nombre Istuze. La cumbre se refleja ya en la edición de 1929 del mapa (MTN50 139-Eulate, 1929) como un vértice de nombre Istuze que no se llegó a constituir. Aunque la peña no resulta muy difícil de subir, presenta un resalte en la parte baja que resulta selectivo, por lo que se podría generar cierta duda razonable sobre la conquista de su cima hasta que, de forma definitiva, en 1967, los técnicos del I.G.N. no instalasen la escala de hierro en la parte inferior con objeto de construir la señal geodésica en lo alto de la peña, formada por dos altura similares muy próximas separadas por una brecha. Sin embargo, sobre la cima se observa terreno excavado por intervención humana lo que hace pensar que la altura puedo ser utilizada como atalaya de vigilancia o fuerte tal vez utilizada en las guerras carlistas, que tanta incidencia tuvieron en el valle de Amezkoa

Mi ascensión

Ruta sencilla y corta que comienza en el pueblo Navarro de Larraona. En el pueblo existe un gran aparcamiento público donde dejar el coche

La primera parte es una aburrida subida por una pista de hormigón de kilómetro y medio. Ascendemos 200 metros hasta llegar al puerto de Larraona que da entrada a la planicie de Aldarana, inicio de del parque de Urbasa. Nada más llegar nos encontramos con la ermita de San Benito, bien conservada



Junto a la ermita es donde tenemos que abandonar la pista principal y seguir hacia el Oeste, por una zona sin senda marcada pero que nos lleva a una alambrada. Hay que seguir esa alambrada, dejándola a nuestra izquierda. A la izquierda tenemos el barranco de Ube. Así continuamos hasta alcanzar un muro de piedra. El muro marca la división entre el País Vasco y Navarra. Nos dirigimos hacia la cima por un precioso hayedo, sin senda muy definida, pero fácil de andar. Podemos ir por cualquier lado del muro



La cima consiste en dos agujas rocosas, una pegada a la otra, de varios metros de altura. El Instituto Geográfico Nacional tiene un vértice geodésico en uno de ellos y ha instalado dos tramos de escalera metálico que posibilitan subir hasta arriba. El espacio en la cima es mínimo pero suficiente para disfrutar de las vistas del barranco de Ube, con Larraona al fondo. En la cima también existe un buzón





Entre los dos tramos de escalera metálica hay un corto tramo de trepada. Subirlo no tiene demasiada complicación pero bajarlo es un poco más peligroso porque hay que bajar de espaldas y no se ve dónde se pueden apoyar los pies. Es un punto que requiere mucha atención



El regreso desde la cima nos lleva primeramente al punto en el que nos encontramos el muro pero ahora hay que seguir el tramo que va hacia el Noreste, dejando el muro a la derecha. Estamos en un enorme hayedo sin senda visible pero el muro nos sirve de referencia. Caminar por aquí es fácil pero cuidado con resbalar con las hojas o tropezarse con las ramas que hay en el suelo. Este bosque nos lleva hasta interceptar una pista en dirección Este. Esta pista nos lleva de vuelta al plano de Aldarate

La ruta tiene una segunda cima, el monte Etxaurte, de 1025 metros. Si no se quiere subir se puede caminar hasta la ermita de San Benito y bajar por donde hemos subido. Si se quiere hacer esta segunda cumbre, se sigue por Aldarate hasta el WPT “Subida a Etxaurte”. Primera tenemos una campa de hierba y luego volvemos a entrar en un maravilloso hayedo en el que no hay senda. La referencia, en este caso, es una alambrada que tenemos que seguir, dejándola a la derecha sin cruzarla. Así llegaremos hasta el pico Etxaurte, marcado con un pequeño montón de piedras



La bajada a Larraona ya es directa. Primero llegamos al puerto de Iarate y allí se toma una senda de tierra muy visible que baja rápidamente a Larraona

La ruta es bonita por los bosques de hayas que se cruzan y por lo peculiar de la cima, con esas escaleras metálicas

Summit of the mountain range of Entzia/Urbasa that is close and to the east of Murube (1128 m). It is a small rocky peak on whose summit there is a geodesic vertex which is accessed by an iron ladder that allows easy access to the rock. It is also called Izluze, by contraction of the term Aitzluze (Long Rock)

The summit marks the limit between the mountain range of Entzia (Álava) and that of Urbasa (Navarra), being to the South the valley of the Amezkoa, boxed between this mountain range and that of Lokiz

This summit was included in the first edition of the Montes de Euskal Herria catalog (1950), in pos. 84 of the Montes de Araba with the name Istuze. The summit is already reflected in the 1929 edition of the map (MTN50 139-Eulate, 1929) as a vertex with the name Istuze, which was never constituted. Although the crag is not very difficult to climb, it has a projection in the lower part that is selective, so it could generate some reasonable doubt about the conquest of its summit until, definitively, in 1967, the technicians of the I.G.N. did not install the iron ladder in the lower part in order to build the geodesic sign at the top of the crag, formed by two similar heights very close separated by a gap. However, on the top there is excavated land by human intervention which makes us think that the height can be used as a watchtower or fort perhaps used in the Carlist wars, which had so much incidence in the valley of Amezkoa

My ascent

Easy and short hike that starts in the village of Larraona in Navarre. In the village there is a large public parking lot where you can leave your car

The first part is a boring climb along a concrete track for a kilometer and a half. We ascend 200 meters until we reach the Larraona pass that leads to the plain of Aldarana, the beginning of the Urbasa Park. Upon arrival we find the hermitage of San Benito, well preserved



Next to the hermitage is where we have to leave the main track and continue to the west, through an area without a marked path but that leads us to a wire fence. We must follow this fence, leaving it to our left. To the left we have the Ube ravine. This way we continue until we reach a stone wall. The wall marks the division between the Basque Country and Navarre. We head towards the top through a beautiful beech forest, without a well-defined path, but easy to walk. We can go on either side of the wall



The summit consists of two rocky pinnacles, one next to the other, several meters high. The National Geographic Institute has a geodetic vertex on one of them and has installed two flights of metal stairs that make it possible to climb to the top. The space at the top is minimal but sufficient to enjoy the views of the Ube ravine, with Larraona in the background. At the top there is also a mailbox





Between the two sections of metal stairs there is a short stretch of climbing. Going up it is not too complicated but going down it is a bit more dangerous because you have to go down backwards and you can't see where you can lay your feet. It is a point that requires a lot of attention



The return from the top takes us first to the point where we found the wall but now we must follow the section that goes to the Northeast, leaving the wall on the right. We are in a huge beech forest with no visible path but the wall serves as a reference. Walking here is easy but be careful not to slip on the leaves or trip over the branches on the ground. This forest leads us to intercept a track in an easterly direction. This track takes us back to the plane of Aldarate

The route has a second peak, Mount Etxaurte, 1025 meters. If you do not want to climb it you can walk to the hermitage of San Benito and go down the way we have ascended. If you want to do this second summit, continue through Aldarate to the WPT "Ascento Etxaurte". First we have a grassy field and then we re-enter a wonderful beech forest where there is no path. The reference, in this case, is a wire fence that we have to follow, leaving it to the right without crossing it. This way we will arrive to the Etxaurte peak, marked with a small pile of stones



The descent to Larraona is already direct. First we reach the pass of Iarate and there we take a very visible dirt path that quickly descends to Larraona

The route is beautiful for the beech forests that are crossed and for the peculiarity of the top, with those metal stairs
