Itinerary description
Day 5: from Landmannalaugar to a camp close to the lakes NNE of Torfajokull. This route is not optimal: several river crossings, and a steep ascent from Drengsli (waypoint). Here is also the only tricky part of the 9-day tour, the last 10 m of the ascent is steep, slippery and exposed. So there should be better ways. At the end of the track, we crossed a broad ridge (scree) of ca. 900 m, but it may be better to go W of it. We did not see anybody after leaving Landmannalaugar.

The two deep blue-green slopes on this picture can be seen in Google Earth. These are the most remarkable colors we saw in the Landmannalaugar area. https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/afangagil-landmannalaugar-holaskjol-day-5-9-492063/photo-134299

Hi!! Thanks a lot for uploading the route!! What do you mean by: " ridge (scree) of ca. 900 m, but it may be better to go W of it." I'm plannig going there this summer so any consideration will be worth it.
Thanks in advance
To Chilam Balam: The highest peak, at 12.9 km close to the end of the track, can probably be circumvented W by going S instead of SE at 12.5 km. The slope to the peak (in fact, it is a broad ridge that we crossed) is quite steep and loose, scree, and if you stay W of it, the last part of the hike may be more convenient. Apart from that, and much earlier, the ascent up from Drengsli starting at 9.4 km on our track is very steep and exposed, probably it is better to leave Drengsli to the E much earlier, maybe at 5.5 km or so. The final place for camping is very nice (3rd picture) and isolated. Enjoy!
Hi Dick!! Thanks a lot for your information, I've just found another path to arrive at your camp near the lake. After descending Drengsli there is a river (10.3 km) so the path follows the west riverside until achieving the proximities of the final lake. The path continues ESE (quite close of the glacier) until the little Muggudalir valley and finally to the Struslaug also... I'm going to leave in three days, I'll tell you when I come back!!!
Also, do you think it's worth it visit the Graenalon lake in Skaftafell (I saw a picture of you and also a 3 day hike)??
