Itinerary description
Day 2: a long but easy hike from Afangagil to Blautakvisl valley. The terrain is mostly very easy: flat, almost paved at some places. First, from Afangagil to exit Hekla on the F225. Then, we followed the unpaved road to Hekla for some km. A little S of a shield ("Hekla"), there is a marked route up Raudaskal (somewhat SW of our track). Close to Krakatindur, some 4WD tracks were followed for short stretches (photo), and there is an old lava field that was crossed. At the end, the Blautakvisl valley is the first place after Afangagil where we found water (apart from the rain and some old snow), which we expected so we carried a lot. We camped there, but is should be easy to hike to hut Vesturdalir, just a few km ESE of our camp.
