Itinerary description
Mali i Korres could be coming out of a novel. It is the backdrop for several villages on an isolated highland plateau. Situated right on the boundary of Tirana and Elbasan regions, it takes a while to get there along winding roads in desolated landscapes.
We chose a round-trip across the summit of Korres. Due to the much eroded hillsides, the trip requires to descend deep into the ravines. Regardless where you start the loop hike, the total elevation gain will always be the same.
We opted to start with a descent of 200 Meter, but other starting points are possible. One of them would be Korres village - but then you have to climb the 200 meters on the final stretch of your return.
For shorter hikes, you may opt for an in-and-out hike along the same route, for instance starting in Cerujë.
The hike follows trail, forest roads, village roads and short sections through farmland, where orientation might be difficult.
The best way to approach the trailhead is from Elbasan, via the road to Mollagjesh

Tomorri is certainly the most photogenic mountain in Albania, especially when seen from the North (as in this image). It is a long climb.... https://www.wikiloc.com/outdoor-trails/across-mali-i-korres-5652069#wp-5652076/photo-2999971
An award winning picture! Note the chicken and the fodder in the basement's open door with the living area on the balcony. https://www.wikiloc.com/outdoor-trails/across-mali-i-korres-5652069#wp-5652072/photo-2999957
As of yesterday the google earth satellite image of this trail has been updated. I came across this update of the area south of Tirana and was fascinated by the amount of detail, in particular when compared to the non-updated adjacent image. So much more interesting to look now and see the exact match between partly obscure path and given trail.
We did the trail search with the old image, which was a lot of guess work. The old image was out of focus, had little contrast, was old (e.g. not showing new buildings or paths) and was partly obscured by clouds. As the new - and very clear - image shows, we were pretty close to the "best" route.
For those aiming to practice how to find trails, I recommend to do so in the area south of Tirana that has these relatively new (2011-2012-2013) satellite images in google earth. Once you "see" in real life the trails that you planned in google earth, it will be easier to discover trails in areas where google earth still has old or rather "shady" images..
