Itinerary description
Below is the complete account of the Abbottabad to Thandiani trek. During my last trek, we started from Abbottabad and hiked to Mera Rehmat Khan Top, which is approximately 5-6 kilometers short of the Thandiani Top. Unfortunately, in my previous attempt, we couldn't complete the entire trek due to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. However, this time we were fortunate to have camping gear that allowed us to stay the night despite being caught in thunderstorms and hailstorms.
The trek commences at the foothills of Abbottabad and is frequently used by locals to reach the Thandiani Top on foot. To reach the trailhead, you can hire a taxi or a Suzuki van that goes to Pajo Mosque. From the mosque, the trek begins. You will pass through a village and walk on a jeepable trail for approximately 3-4 kilometers. From there, a narrow path commences, leading to Kunda Pond. It is advisable not to drink the water from the pond as it is intended for animals.
Near Kunda Pond, there is a flat ground that offers a panoramic view of Thandiani Top in the distance. At this point, you might contemplate whether to proceed further, as the initial leg of the trek is steep and can be tiring.
From the pond, continue straight and take a left turn towards Mera Rehmat Village. The length of this leg is approximately 4-6 kilometers, although I cannot provide an exact measurement. In case of inclement weather, you can seek shelter in the Republica Pods or any other building in Mera Rehmat. The locals in this area are known for their friendliness.
Once you arrive at Mera Rehmat Village, you will need to take an offshoot that leads to the road junction of Mera Rehmat Trek. Thandiani will still be 4-6 kilometers away at this point. Follow the road to the left until you reach a forest guest house. From there, you will notice a seemingly easy trail initially, but it becomes progressively challenging. The path narrows to the extent that only one foot can be placed on the ground at a time. Furthermore, the trek is in poor condition and susceptible to landslides. Every 400 meters, you will encounter fallen trees that have been uprooted due to landslides. We faced considerable difficulties due to adverse weather conditions, so it is essential to be prepared as you may become stranded in the cold weather.
At the end of this leg, you will reach a junction. If you turn left, you can proceed to Sialkot Village, which offers another beautiful trekking experience. Take a right turn, and you will arrive at the Thandiani camping pods. Here, you have the option to camp in your own tent or choose one of the guestrooms or camping pods available. There is a restaurant on-site, and the cook prepares delicious Daal, Biryani, and Karahi.
I would rate the trek difficult primarily due to the unpredictable weather conditions, steep ascents, and limited maintenance of the trail.
