Itinerary description

We drove to the end of Leirdalsheiðarvegur and to the beach and took the beach to Bjarnaskriður (Achtung: the beach is only passable on low tides). Went up Bjarnafjallsskriður and over to Hafragjá. Over Kýrlækur and maintained altitude to traverse over to Ytri-Brettingsstaðadal. Once there we took heading up Jökulbrekku and into a small valley where a small glacier is. Once there you have to go up a steep hill of loose gravel (skriða) and it is really the only possible pass to hike out of this valley. It is a bit of an effort and one has to be in good shape and have good shoes to go up there.
Once over the hill you are in Kaðaldalur, be careful of the glacier in bottom of the glacier there, it was a bit cracked. From there it is a basic downhill hike. No need to go over the river that runs through the valley, just stay north of it.
A really great hike on a good day. We went on a sunny summerday. Most of the way we were not on any visible path.

Danger alert: Following news in Iceland in July 2022, I can tell you that this path can be very dangerous. I recommend that you stay away from it, unless perhaps if you have an experienced guide who has walked it more than once. And needless to say: under no circumstances you should be alone on Bjarnarfjall.
