⇒ Link to the next stage: 90 - APPALACHIAN TRAIL - PENNSYLVANIA -Section 13.1 -From Milesburn Cabin to Pine Grove Furnace St. Park / Ironmaster's Mansion
Tour through sections 14.1 and 13.2 of the Appalachian Trail , passing through the state of Pennsylvania (United States), from south to north, from the Rocky Mountain Shelter, to Milesburn Cabin PATC, passing through the very interesting Caledonia State Park. From mile AT 1,079.20, to mile 1,089.8 measured from Springer, Georgia.
The layout of this map has been done manually, since in the original, made with GPS, there was a registration failure.
The stage runs entirely inside the immense Michaux State Forest, on South Mountain, at one end of which is, as a small annex, the Caledonia State Park.
The first 5 km. of the route they follow the crest of Rocky Mountain, in soft descent, until reaching the US-30, the Conococheague Creek and the Caledonia State Park.
The area of the Caledonia State Park next to the river has facilities for picnic and services. The land that occupies this state park was owned by Thaddeus Stevens, who in 1837 had built an iron casting facility there. Notorious abolitionist and member of the house of representatives, Thaddeus Stevens is considered the father of the public school in Pennsylvania. In 1863, during the American Civil War, the Calvalry Confederate destroyed the entire iron smelting facility, and the area was used as hospitals during the Battle of Gettysburg, and was sold to the state in 1903.
From Conococheague Creek, the trail begins a continuous ascent, in some steep places, with a drop of more than 1,000 feet, up to the crest of the Big Pine Flat Ridge, crossing a dense and varied vegetation, in which they predominate the rhododendrons.
On the route we find the magnificent shelter Quarry Gap Shelter, originally built in 1935 and renovated in 1995. Two shelters joined by a covered area for food, with good facilities and well maintained. Of the careful maintenance of this refuge they give faith, among other details, that counts on plants and ornamental flowers.
Once reached the crest of the Big Pine Flat Ridge, we followed it for just over four miles, to reach the end of the stage, the Milesburn Cabin, managed by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club.
The cabin is old, but has space with bunk beds for eight people in the upper floor, and in the lower floor has a kitchen-dining-living room, with fireplace and wood stove.
In the vicinity of the cabin, about 50 meters away, there is a good source of water supply.
