⇒ Link to the next stage: 85 - APPALACHIAN TRAIL - MARYLAND - Sections 5.2, 6 and 7. From Harpers Ferry (West Virginia), to Rocky Run Shelter (Maryland)
Tour of the Appalachian Trail , as it passes through the state of Virginia (United States), from south to north. For a large part of the route, the path follows the dividing line between the states of Virginia and West Virginia, and in its final section, it is already entirely in the state of West Virginia.
The stage corresponds to sections 2.1 and 1, according to the official distribution of sections of the Appalachian Trail, in the state of Virginia, and runs from the Blackburn Trail Center to the historic town of Harpers Ferry, in West Virginia.
We start the hike at the Blackburn Trail Center, a shelter and reception center managed by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, located about 300 meters downhill from the trail. The center offers free accommodation for hikers, and has a dining room, space to set up tents, a magnificent porch, showers and other services. If the day is clear, from this spot you can see the George Washington Monument and the towers of the Washington DC Cathedral from a great distance.
After the steep climb to the crest of the mountain, and with the exception of a few small sections, the trail follows a fairly flat course, followed by a very gradual descent, first to Keys Gap, and finally to Harpers Ferry.
In contrast to the memory of the exhausting seesaw of the "roller coaster", in the preceding days, the walk through this section of the AT sometimes seems like a comfortable walk through a park, although there are also sections with rocks and stones, very similar. to those found in Pennsylvania, with an interesting rocky crest in the vicinity of Buzzard Rock, and a segment of the trail with many stones, at the end, already in the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park enclosure.
