Tour of the Appalachian Trail (Appalachian Trail), as it passes through the state of Georgia (United States), in a south to north direction), from the Tray Mountain Shelter, to Dicks Creek Gap, at the intersection of the trail with the route US-76.
This section of the trail corresponds to the first part of section 12, of the official distribution of sections of the Appalachian Trail, in the states of Georgia and North Carolina.
We started the tour very early, at dawn. The surroundings of the Tray Mountain Shelter were full of small tents, from the many "hikers" who had been arriving during the previous day, and who took advantage of the last minutes of sleep.
With the only exception of the modest Kelly Knob (4,276 feet), from where you can enjoy a good panoramic view, the stage has no major climbs.
Starting at Tray Mountain, the trail runs at an elevation of approximately 3,500 feet, alternating between small hills and fairly flat areas, following the crest of the Blue Ridge mountain range into the Chattahoochee National Forest.
Already in the last 4 km, the AT descends to the 2,675 feet altitude of Dicks Creek Gap, where there is ample and safe parking.
Less than a kilometer west of this intersection, is the Top of Georgia (*), a shelter for mountaineers, which has accommodation in bunk beds, with breakfast, kitchen, small supply store and showers, and also allows camping in its surroundings, also offering free transportation to various points along the trail. A good option to spend the night, always reserving in advance.
(*) Top of Georgia was sold in 2019, and the new owners renovated it and opened it as Around the Bend .
