Tour of the Appalachian Trail ( Appalachian Trail ), as it passes through the state of Georgia (United States), from south to north), from Unicoi Gap (at the intersection with route GA-75), to the Tray Mountain Shelter.
The layout corresponds to the second part of section 12, according to the official division of the trail, in the states of Georgia and North Carolina, continuing the Blue Ridge mountain range, always inside the Chattahoochee National Forest .
The stage is short, not so much because of the difficulty of the terrain (which does not offer any complications), but rather because of the scheduling needs of the following ones. Even so, the ascent towards Rocky Mountain (4,017 feet), with just over 1,000 feet of elevation gain, and its subsequent rapid descent towards the Indian Cave Gap, and the immediately following ascent to the top of Tray Mountain (4,430 feet), with just over 1,300 feet of elevation gain, although modest, adds a small dose of effort to the short course.
Having started the march quite early, and already inside the Tray Mountain Wilderness , we arrived at the Tray Mountain Shelter before noon, with the possibility of settling in the refuge itself. The shelter is small, but quite modern, and has a latrine, steel cables to hang food, a fire ring and a good fountain very close.
Throughout the day, numerous "hikers" stopped in the place to take a short rest and continue the march, and those who chose to spend the night there, mostly preferred to camp in the vicinity, from where there is also a magnificent panoramic view. , so that in the shelter there were some places left over.
It was a very clear night, a good temperature, and a bright full moon, and the requisite campfire kept burning until dawn.
