Stage 63
⇐ Link to the previous stage: 62 - APPALACHIAN TRAIL - VIRGINIA -Section 28.1 and 27.3 -From Lamberts Meadow Shelter to Angels Gap, Hay Rock and US-11, Troutville
⇒ Link to the next stage: 64 - APPALACHIAN TRAIL - VIRGINIA - Section 27.1 and 26 -From Wilson Creek Shelter to Black Horse Gap and Bearwallow Gap, route VA-43
Route along the Appalachian Trail , passing through the state of Virginia (United States), in a south-north direction, from the intersection of the trail with US-11, in Troutville, VA, until the Wilson Creek Shelter, always inside the George Washington Jefferson National Forest, with some stretches of corridors open through private agricultural properties.
The stage corresponds to the second part of section 27, according to the official distribution of sections of the trail, passing through the state of Virginia.
As soon as the tour begins, the AT traverses an active railway line, and enters beautiful, private pastures, which from its highest area offer magnificent views of the Fullhardt Knob, Tinker Mountain, Julias Knob and McAfee Knob, starting at then a gradual ascent of about 5 km., to the top of the Fullhardt Knob, with an approximate difference of 1,300 feet.
The morning is cold and windy, at times sunny and sometimes cloudy, with some showers in the form of snow that contrast with the signs of arrival of spring in the valleys and more sheltered areas of the mountains.
The arrival at the Fullhardt Knob Shelter, at the top of the summit, coincided with a light and transient snow, so the refuge fulfilled its function of shelter and protection.
After a very gradual descent of 500 feet, along a little less than two kilometers, and a subsequent climb of similar distance, also very gradual, the trail reaches a small elevation (Ridge Crest) from which it descends more steeply. pronounced towards the bed of the Curry Creek, small stream encased between slopes.
After about three kilometers of small hills, with continuous ups and downs, we reached a place known as Collier's pitt, on the banks of Wilson Creek, where during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries charcoal was produced, necessary to supply the forges and ironworks of the region.
A short distance away, in a very unguarded location, on the way up to the Black Horse Gap, is the Wilson Creek Shelter, built in 1986, with capacity for six people, and which has a latrine, picnic table, small grill and water supply (about 200 meters, hillside down).
In this refuge we will spend the night, which, given the low temperature and the wind, promises to be very cold and unpleasant. We'll have at least the company of a good campfire.
