Tour of the second part of section 28 of the Appalachian Trail , as it passes through the state of Virginia (United States), from south to north, between the intersection of the trail with route VA-311 , very close to the town of Catawba, and the Lamberts Meadow Shelter.
We carried out the march at the end of winter, a slightly cloudy day, with a bit of heat and threat of showers and an isolated storm, but finally dry. There was no wind, nor snow or ice on the trail, something that in the winter season must be taken into account in this area, due to the risk of slips and falls on a route that frequently passes along the edge of rocky cliffs.
From the starting point of the stage, and during the first three kilometers of the route, the trail presents a very moderate profile, with some short slopes, but almost flat, always through the Catawba Mountain , and leaves aside two shelters , both sleeping six people: the Johns Spring Shelter (built 2003) and the Catawba Mountain Shelter (built 1984).
From this second refuge, and for almost three more kilometers, a gradual but constant climb begins towards McAfee Knob (3,199 feet) , overcoming a difference in altitude of about 1,000 feet. Along the way, panoramic views of the surrounding valleys abound, as a kind of preview of what the summit will offer us.
The rocky ledges and cliffs of McAfee Knob, with its spectacular views of the Catawba and Roanoke Valleys, are, without a doubt, one of the favorite and most photographed destinations for hikers from around the world, who travel the Appalachian Trail, constituting one of the most representative images of this great trail.
On clear days, to the northwest, you can see the long ridges of several mountain ranges of the immense George Washington and Jefferson National Forest: North Mountain, Sinking Creek Mountain, Potts Mountain, Peters Mountain, and the West Virginia Mountains.
Leaving behind these magnificent cornices, the trail begins a rapid descent, passing through a small labyrinth of large rocks known as Devil's Kitchen, and also on the same descent, through a free camping area (Pig Farm Campsite) and the Campbell Shelter, built in 1989, with capacity for six people.
For the next four kilometers of the route, the AT runs along the col that forms Tinker Mountain, between McAfee Knob and Tinker Cliffs, with two small intermediate hills, the second of which offers beautiful rock formations and panoramic views towards the west (McAfee Knob) and to the east and south (Brushy Mountain, Carvin Creek, Carvin Cove Reservoir, and Tinker Ridge).
The climb to Tinker Cliffs (3,016 feet) is tough. Possibly it is the fatigue accumulated at this point in the walk, since the 750 feet of elevation gain should not represent any difficulty, nor justify the fatigue; or it is simply the increasingly distant image of the McAfee Knob, which reminds us of the long journey made here.
Be that as it may, the reward is very good, since the large rocky cliffs of Tinker Cliffs do not disappoint anyone. What's more, you could say that without being as well known as McAfee Knob, the Tinker Cliffs, with their mix of rocky ledges, pine trees rooted in the rock and spectacular panoramic views, have nothing to envy of their neighbor (except their fame).
About two kilometers from the summit, down the slope, is the Lamberts Meadow Shelter, a shelter built in 1974, with capacity for six people, which has a latrine, barbecue and an easy supply of water, due to the proximity of a stream. There we conclude the day.
Finally, some GPS error jumps have been observed in the altitude graph of this itinerary. This is the real profile of the stage:
