Itinerary description
Campell Isbert’s Dam figure of 8 (603a)
This started out as a reccy for the Bullrun Walk (604a) but having seen the cows on the slopes behind the ranch we thought it safer to avoid this – although we did have a look at the “rake” path which goes up the ledge from the riverbed, looks doable although quite steep. This walk turned out to be very good and would be suitable as a last day HF walk for everyone to do together – although A group could go further into dam and explore bull run path.
Journey to Campell via Parcent because of road closure at Alcalali took 45 mins. Parked in main street after church but the is a car park – turn left immediately after the marked parking spaces on LHS, then left again going parallel to main road and then turn right at back of bar to car park on left. Return path passes this car park..
9.35 Started walk – past church, bins and temp sign then follow yellow/ white markers downhill. Continue left at signpost and then to side of large house (being renovated). Go through tunnel and follow path down to dam.
10.30 Arrived at Dam – diversion to left takes you to head of dam (we didn’t do this today. Follow waymarkers across riverbed to emerge on tarmac road. Pass path up to bullrun & farm gate. We stopped for 15 min break at bullrun path.
11.10 Continue along wide path through orange groves, turn right towards river bed
11.25 Cross riverbed and continue on path, then road, returning to path near renovated house and turn up by signpost to Campel and Fontilles on outward path. Follow marked path uphill until reaching junction for Fontilles which we take. Very soon after reach font and then towards road.
12.20 Emerge onto main road and go across and slightly left to waymarked path by side of castle.
12.25 – 12.45 Lunch along this path. The continue downwards to cross river and up again, crossing road near old hospital (picking up 5 villages walk) and continuing up to wide track. We turned off wide track following markers then branched right at fallen tree to cross another wider path an continue down to riverbed and path up to Campell.
1.35 Back at car after passing car park. First bar closed but Bar Canya (opp church) was open.
Total 6 miles, 4 hours, 1300 ft ascent.
