Tour of the Appalachian Trail ( Appalachian Trail ), as it passes through the state of Georgia (United States), from south to north.
The stretch covered corresponds to the first part of section 13, according to the official distribution of the stages of the trail, and is between the Low Gap Shelter and the intersection of the AT with route GA-75, in Unicoi Gap.
The day is cloudy, with a little mist in the early hours of the morning, and very cold. The weather forecast points to the possibility of freezing rain during the day. The trail is quite snowy, and the snow is icy, especially in the less sunny slope areas, which makes it necessary to use microspikes for a good part of the walk.
The layout of almost the entire stage is relatively flat, at an elevation close to 3,500 feet, although there is no shortage of small and continuous ups and downs. Much of the way follows a wide logging road, and the ascent to the top of Blue Mountain (4,025 feet) is extremely gradual. A kilometer and a half before this summit, in a short side detour, is the cold and unwelcoming Blue Mountain Shelter, which due to its altitude and position is very exposed to the wind, which perhaps can be appreciated during the summer, but not on a day as cold and unpleasant as today.
The more than two kilometers of descent from Blue Mountain to Unicoi Gap are quite steep, and in some areas also rocky, which, together with the existing snow and ice on its slope, requires extreme caution during the march.
At Unicoi Gap (2,949 feet), the Appalachian Trail intersects major Routes 75 and 17, and has ample parking.
